I care because it involves what the thinking and attitudes of reasonable educated and influential people have toward science. As with the Churches, the Beatles. Maharishi and Hare Krishna are very influential in the thinking of many people world wide.

In the case of the Beatles it is the Maharishi and Hare Krishna beliefs. In the case of the YEC, and OEC believers it is the Evangelical fundamentalist leaders, doctrine and dogma of Fundamentalist Christianity, which they blindly follow and reject science.
IIRC they all only had High School educations but no formal education beyond that. What's next Mick Jagger's and Keith Richards' views on Quantum Physics? I just don't see that what some of the Beatles thought about evolution is really pertinent that's all.

I would be inclined to accept Brian May's (hes the lead guitarist for Queen) views on astrophysics ... but only because he has a PhD in the subject.

Again, even a high school education, particular a British high school education is sufficient to fully understand the science of evolution. The science behind evolution and Charles Darwin are covered in detail at the high school level. The rejection of evolution by John Lennon is not a problem of his education, it is a problem of taking his religious beliefs as fact and rejecting science.

By the way, the acceptance nor the rejection of Quantum Physics is not the subject of the thread, nor is understood at the high school level.

Again, it is the parallel regardless of education, where religious beliefs, the word of the Maharashi and the interpretation of ancient scripture in this case, are taking taken as fact, and science is rejected.

Again, as with Christian fundamentalist churches, the beliefs and teachings of Hare Krishna, the Beatles, and the Maharishi are very influential in the world. This influence is detrimental to the progress of science,

pssst, John Lennon just ... said stuff. He enjoyed shocking people. His views on any number of subjects should not be gleaned from one statement. Let it go.

I remember reading somewhere that he was mad about the decision to go more mainstream because it meant they couldn't light condoms on fire and stab them into walls with the table knives at the clubs they would play at before they went all mainstream

I disagree, his statements matched the Hare Krishna and the Maharishi teachings. Are they and the fundamentalist Christians 'just saying stuff'???

'Just saying stuff' if you have a following of millions can cause a lot of trouble.

Sorry if that's harsh, but you do have a real habit of going off at a complete tangent, almost always involving some slur on Christianity/Christians/all religions except your own odd version. Why should anyone respond intelligently and coherently to stuff like that?

No coherent intelligible response. Disagreeing with religious beliefs does not represent slurs.

Like others you have never responded to the problem why the majority of Christians oppose science. This not a slur it is a fact.

You have not established that the majority of Christians oppose science. Why should anyone waste time with your silly strawman?

Polls over the past 30 years or so have demonstrated this. Between 1982 and the present Gallop polls have shown that between 40% and 47% of all Americans believe in strict Biblical Creationism. This does not take into account other non-science views like OEC and versions of ID that only conditionally accept certain aspects of the scientific view of the history of the earth and evolution.

      http://www.gallup.com/poll/145286/fo...eationism.aspx

The population of the USA is 76% Christian (2008), with ~51% of Christians Protestants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religio..._United_States

do the math, it is not difficult.

I'm surprised this came from you Tig, it sounds like a post from Mags, Adrift or maybe Jorge. I have presented this in a number of previous threads. I guess it is time work it through the calculator again.

There's one problem with this shuny. Most Christians aren't Americans.

Not a problem, first since my references are for the USA, I guess I need to make that clearer, but . . .

The USA leads the missionary drive in the third world. The most successful missionaries and heavy funding in the third world are Evangelical Fundamentalists from the USA. More data to follow. I would agree the largest country in the world, population wise, China, predominantly believed in evolution, but only a fraction are Christians. Western Europe, the most apathetic and secular of the Christian world predominately still considers evolution true.

I feel like its Groundhog Day this has been gone over before, but nonetheless here we go again.
