It's definitely not even worth the small price I paid for it during a Steam sale. I've never been more bored in my life and it's a game about the freaking zombie apocalypse! How do you screw that up? I hope you like looking at your foot, because that's what you'll see 80% of the game as your character kicks, kicks, kicks his way to victory because melee weapons and combat blows.
Maybe it's better in multiplayer, but it should be able to stand up in singleplayer. And it doesn't.

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

I take it you didn't play more than 5 minutes? There's nothing more satisfying than carving through a pack of raging zombies with a machette. The whole "realistic" movement/fov gets on my nerves in a lot of modern games but you get used to it eventually.
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.
The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.
And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

A lot of people don't seem to like it. It is very much like Borderlands in many ways. It really is more fun with others though. The people I've talked to who don't like it don't care much for Borderlands either, which tells me it is more or less due to the gameplay than anything else and by that I mean the fetch quests which people seem to dislike.

If a game can't hook me in 2 hours, it's failed somewhere. I didn't think I was buying a kicking simulator.

You won't get through even a fraction of the game just by kicking. Kicking is good to buy you some time later in the game and save durability/ammo by headstomping downed zombies but you'll run out of stamina way too fast if all you do is click. IIRC it took me a lot more than 2 hours to get used to the game and experience some of the more entertaining parts. Once you have some decent weapons, played with crafting a bit and gained some levels the game gets much better.

I've been playing it some more and even had some fun, but there's a trillion little things about the game the irritate the hell out of me. Can the game be modded?

To be fair, the game has grown on me a bit. I can see it being fun especially in multiplayer. But if they make a sequel, they have their work cut out for them. It needs to be streamlined and tweaked quite a lot.
