Surely you're not suggesting there is an equivalence between a medication that restores a natural bodily function, and a surgical procedure that mutilates a person suffering from a psychological disorder who is under the delusion that he or she is the "incorrect" gender.

        So explain this to me:

One man says, "I was born the wrong gender! I should have been a woman!"

Another man says, "I was born the wrong species! I should have been a dog!"

        Psychologically speaking, what's the difference?

It's worth noting that Trump's Tweet was the first the military generals had heard of the proposed transgender policy change. Trump was, surprise, lying about consulting the military.

Trump: I consulted the military about the transgender ban. Military: no, you didn’t:

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley... told reporters that he found out about the ban "the same way everybody else did — on the news."

The Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. James Dunford, said Thursday that the military wouldn’t implement the ban absent a formal, non-tweeted order from the commander in chief.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

And see that's kind of what I was wondering about. When the 'don't ask don't tell' expired, most of the brass seemed on board with it.

If the leadership of the military some concrete reasons why the trans-ban needs to happen, I'd hear them out, but alas it looks like more looniness from the Trump madhouse.

Jimmy, you do understand that the military separates people for medical conditions, right? I know because I have plenty of buddies that were separated for medical conditions. I am also curious why many liberals have problems with viagra. Are men and the women in their lives not supposed to have a sex life by having a medical condition treated? Being in the military is stressful already, nice to see that you want the military divorce rates to go even higher. So much for that compassion that so many liberals claim to have.

In order to be mission ready, it's necessary to be in good mental and physical shape. Co-morbidity is extremely high among those who struggle with body dysmorphia, even after a surgery, so to talk of "healthy fit" transexuals is nonsense. There's nothing healthy about thinking that you ought to be the opposite sex, and even if they aren't expressly exhibiting co-morbid traits, it's selfish to others to risk it. But more to the point, it's a major distraction. I remember serving with a number of people who likely suffered from some sort of undiagnosed psychiatric issues, and the stress of dealing with them often affected the rest of the flight. Many of these types were eventually discharged from the military after some bizarre, often dangerous, action on their part. It's just not good for moral, and people who are unaffiliated with the military lifestyle sometimes don't understand that.
I could likely fill a book with stories of people doing dumb things. Personally I think much of people's inability to understand this is due to having no experience with living the military life. In the civilian world, your job generally only bleeds into your personal life as much as you allow it to. Even the Air Force (which is often said to be the most business like), your job and personal life blends together. You don't just work with these people, but you often live with them and get to know them as well as your family. Which means any psychological issues will be pretty obvious. I agree, the military is no place for social engineering.

The brass tend to be political animals; in any case, they need to follow the orders of their commander in chief. When I served (under DADT), the common philosophy I encountered was, "don't ask, don't tell, don't want to know."

                    You triggered a good memory.

I went to San Angelo, Goodfellow AFB, to see a buddy graduate from (was it called AIT then?) and he had me stay on base in his quad, cause several of his buddies were gone for the weekend. As we walked down the barracks hallway, it seemed like every door had a paper attached to it, with FIGMO written in black magic marker. I asked what that was, and he said "Finally I Got My Orders", and it was a copy of their orders for where there were being assigned.

On my buddy's door was the obligatory copy of the orders but it had DEWMO written on it in large black letters. I looked at him, and he said "Didn't even WANT my Orders". He was 'in love' with a local girl.

Weird. I initially capitalized the whole word too, then thought better of it and changed before posting.

Lilpix, your criticism should be directed at Jed, CP et.al here, as it is they who have the problem with the military treating the troops with Viagra, not me. You go girl! Give em hell!

I've just never needed it. And, if I did, I'd expect to pay for it myself. Lpot is certainly welcome to her opinion, Jim -- I seriously doubt we're gonna get in a knock-down drag-out just cause you're yellin' "sic 'em".

(Are you that little snit in the bar who likes to start fights by telling one guy that another guy called his momma a bad name? )

                          You're amusing, Jim.

It's called Tech School today. I do love tech school romance though. Meeting, dating, married, and divorced within 6 months is how 80% of them end up (sad to say).

I have no issue with treating medical conditions, but I see you flat ignored that the military had zero obligation to keep people with medical conditions. ED is a treatable condition that will not affect unit readiness. Gender resignment surgery will. You do see the difference, right?
