  • John McCain saves Obamacare

Yikes, thought he'd go the other way. His vote broke the tie, and so the ACA will stay as it is.

It was the most dramatic night in the United States Senate in recent history. Just ask the senators who witnessed it.

A seven-year quest to undo the Affordable Care Act collapsed — at least for now — as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) kept his colleagues and the press corps in suspense over a little more than two hours late Thursday into early Friday.

Not since September 2008, when the House of Representatives rejected the Troubled Asset Relief Program — causing the Dow Jones industrial average to plunge nearly 800 points in a single afternoon — had such an unexpected vote caused such a striking twist.

Funny, republicans requested his return because they needed his vote in order to pass the republican bill. Perhaps facing death has an effect on ones conscious. Just saying!

The complete list of GOP that broke rank on this are Lamar Alexander (Tenn), Shelley Moore Capito (West Va), Rob Portman (Ohio), Dean Heller (Maine) and Lis Murkowski (Alaska)... I think there might be more. BUt those are the first ones I found.

        For now.

It will continue to be a campaign issue.

Sen. John McCain delivered an unexpected "no" vote in the early hours of Friday morning that helped defeat an amendment to repeal portions of Obamacare, and said later in a statement that he did so because he wasn't confident that the bill eventually would not become law.

The bill, which removed only parts of Obamacare, was being pitched to Republicans as a vehicle to get something out of the Senate and into a conference with the House where senators hoped it will be improved into a more comprehensive replacement of Obamacare.

McCain, R-Ariz., however, said he was concerned because there was no guarantee that the House would not send the bill directly to President Trump's desk. A statement issued by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., did not assuage his concerns.

"The Speaker's statement that the House would be 'willing' to go to conference does not ease my concern that this shell of a bill could be taken up and passed at any time," he said.

Unlike Democrats, who vote in lockstep according to their leadership's directives, Republicans are free to vote their conscience. (It's "conscience", Jim, not "conscious". Though, many Democrats appear NOT to be 'cosnscious'. )

Why is everyone surprised? John McCain has been against the republican plan all along. Not sure if he is a closet democrat, or if he is just sore at Trump but he has been pretty ornery and against republican strategy for a while now. RINO.

This vote seemed to be a situation catering to McCain's showcasing.

Right CP, keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. You had only 3 members who voted their conscience, and many of the other republicans are thanking them for having the courage to do what they themselves didn't have the guts to do. Besides that, how stupid is it to vote for a bill, that like Lindsey Graham, you believe is a sham and don't want to become law.

It's how you begin working on a compromise bill, you clod. You put forward SOMETHING in which to start compromising.

                      A) At least you used the correct word this time....
                      2) What makes you an expert in what each man's conscience is?

What a blatantly ignorant thing to say!

                      Sausage, Jimmy. Sausage.

And how stupid was it for Democrats to vote in LOCKSTEP on a bill they were told "you have to vote for it so you can see what's in it". Were you not 'conscious' during that little dustup?

And, by the way, Chuck Schmuzer is finally admitting that Obamacare was flawed.

I must have learned from you, whose claim it was that republicans voted their conscience.

Give it up CP, your team has nothing, after eight years of bluster, they've got nothing.

No it isn't moron, thats already taken place, once the Senate passes the bill it goes back to the House and they are under no obligation to compromise on anything which is why McCain voted no.

McCain is in the middle of a solid primary challenge from the Grim Reaper. He really wants to get that nice obituary from the New York Times before he returns to his father the devil. Hopefully they just laugh in his face and smear him anyway.
