From vertical to horizontal to vertical...

It happens to the best of us, transitioning from vertical to horizontal. You’re walking along minding your business, or knee deep in trying to help another with their business when all of a sudden, you’re lying on your back looking up. Somehow, you’ve slipped and fell or tripped and fell. I know that has happened to me on more than one occasion, usually in the winter under icy conditions. It also happens on our walk with the LORD too. For me it usually happens after praying for something I understand as important and God either says no or remains silent. When that happens the negative forces in life are there causing slippery areas in our faith and suddenly we’re flat on our backs looking for help.
It wasn’t that long ago when I realized there’s nothing wrong with me when life becomes slippery and I transition from vertical to horizontal (I slip and fall). While we are on the subject of unanswered or God’s silence there is one prayer He always answers says yes to, “Help me LORD!” Psalm 94 is instrumental in helping us realize that while slips and falls are not normal they can be and are blessings in disguise. “Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” (Psalm 94:17–19, NLT)
Once upon a time after falling the first thing I did out of embarrassment was look around to see if anyone saw me. However, with two artificial hips and muscles that don’t work as good as they once did it’s not out of embarrassment I look around it’s out of a need for help. And believe me there’s nothing better than looking up and seeing the hand of Jesus reaching out to help us get vertical again!
