So NK is posturing and making noises that it is going to attack Guam (a US Territory with a military base)

    --

North Korea Mulling Plan to Strike Guam, State Media Announces

by Stella Kim and Daniel Arkin

SEOUL — North Korea says it is "seriously reviewing" a plan to strike the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam with missiles — just hours after President Donald Trump told the regime that any threat to the United States would be met with "fire and fury."

A spokesman for the Korean People's Army, in a statement carried by the regime's state-run KCNA news agency on Wednesday (local time), said it was going over "military options to form attack positions" around the U.S. territory in order to "send a stern warning" to the United States.

In another statement citing a different military spokesman, North Korea also said it could carry out a pre-emptive operation if the United States showed signs of provocation, according to Reuters.

    ===

Is NK that insane? Does it think it can actually get away with attacking the US (even a US Territory like Guam?)

And if it does, what will the US do? If we attack NK, what will China do?

Maybe NK is depending on the USA being afraid to attack them because of China. But I am pretty sure Trump will not back down and might even decide to strike them with a nuke. That would probably be a problem with China, setting off a nuke so close to them.

    This could get ugly.

John McCain was wringing his hands and whining about how the President shouldn't be making threats he isn't willing to follow through on.

Um, John, I'm pretty sure President Trump is willing to follow through. I think a surgical strike taking out NK's military capabilities would be preferable to a full-on nuclear attack, but nukes may be the only viable option.

The problem with any nukes is that it is dangerous to the surrounding countries: China, Japan and South Korea. But I wouldn't put it past Trump to use a nuke for expediency.

That could cause China to launch nukes at the USA (How can they tell if a missile we are launching at NK might not be an attack on China instead) starting WW3.

The best solution would be for the USA to convince China to invade NK and put Kim Jong-Un out of business before they start launching missiles around. Like in now.

Given NK's general level of industrialization, a few strategically placed MOABs should do the trick.

Also, Trump seems to have a tendency to let the generals handle the details.

if trump nukes NK (highly unlikely unless lil kim nukes south korea or japan) I'm pretty sure he'd at least let China know first.

                      No, it is posturing.

A major cause of this behavior was the US inconsistency on Gaddafi. In 2003, the US talked Gaddafi into eliminating his nuclear weapons program. Then in 2011 they intervened in his country and killed him. The signal that sent to all dictators around the world was: Never let the US talk you out of having nuclear weapons, otherwise they might invade and overthrow you.

So now, every time the NK leader sees any hint on the news that the US is thinking about regime change in NK, his response is to launch a missile to remind Americans that he has nuclear weapons and therefore they can't invade/overthrow him. It's (justifiably) paranoid defensive posturing.

Even the stupidest person in NK knows that actually attacking the US would lead to the US attacking back with overwhelming force.

Maybe NK is depending on the USA being afraid to attack them because of China.

The offensive use of nuclear weapons sets a VERY dangerous/lethal precedent. The rest of the world would be utterly outraged by it, to the point where America might actually face international sanctions because of it even from their own allies. I doubt Trump's own generals and/or the Republican party would actually let it happen.

Also, you and all the US media seem to be forgetting South Korea in this. The capital of South Korea is pretty close to the North Korean border. The US has a multi-decade alliance with South Korea, and that alliance says that South Korea has to be consulted and sign-off on any action the US takes against North Korea, because of the obvious danger to the people of South Korea if NK responds belligerently to the US action. I would estimate the chances of SK signing off on a US nuclear attack on NK at zero.

Highly doubtful. This behavior has been going on for decades. The intervention in 2011 was criminally stupid, though we didn't actually invade.

NK is not exactly living in the real world. It's controlled by a power-drunk leader of a personality cult who gets told what he wants to hear.

Probably - though if NK decides to fire all its howitzers on Seoul at the same time it launches a nuke at the US, the leaders of SK may not be reachable beyond the veil of death to provide their input.

I don't think Kim Jung-un even realizes how weak he is. I think he has been spoon-fed so much BS all his life about how powerful and divine he is, that he actually believes it. Which is pretty scary.

If NK uses a nuke first, all bets are off. I hope that the USA would still show enough restraint to not use nukes but who knows.
