Obama was scrutinized probably more than any other politician in recorded history and nothing really stuck to the point that it prevented him from passing his agenda.

Granted - you can't overcome fandom with mud - even if it's true. But that's more of an exception.

We have issues now with people never attempting candidacy because their backgrounds aren't 'perfect' even though the issues were ancient or even minor. Increasing the level of scrutiny donesn't improve the candidate pool - it likely decreases it.
