If the pro-confederate statue protesters were all protesting based on the historical aspects of the statues, I'd be very sympathetic with them. Unfortunately, way too many white supremacists got involved. Rowdy counter-protestors were inevitable at that point. I tend to overlook just how leftists many of the counter-protesters were, just because the Nazis needed to be countered.

I dunno. IMO the best response would have been a studied pretense that nothing at all was going on - no response to the supremacists' provokations, no news coverage, nada.

Ignoring them has its merits. The media attention gives them a stage. On the other hand, ignoring them can let them grow behind the scenes. I think it's best to make it clear to the general public that their views are unacceptable in modern society.

Ahhh but then you want to starve the supremacists of oxygen, so that they are treated as the irrelevant noise machines they are.

Antifa want the conflict. The supremacists want the conflict. Which is why I say both are equally guilty of wanting to incite violence and both should be condemned.

I think it's hardly tenable to write off the alt-right as too fringe to take seriously given that there is one senior adviser in the White House who has explicitly (by name) allied himself with them.

I'm wondering if the grandfather of the woman killed by the neo-Nazi driving the car will be accused of being a hate mongering racist for saying at her funeral that "all lives matter." Remember how BLM reacts to that and how one candidate for the Democrat Party nomination for president was forced to issue an apology for saying it.

I'm always still in trouble again

Trump’s new campaign chief denies that the alt-right is inherently racist. He describes its ideology as “nationalist,” though not necessarily white nationalist. Likening its approach to that of European nationalist parties such as France’s National Front, he says, “If you look at the identity movements over there in Europe, I think a lot of [them] are really ‘Polish identity’ or ‘German identity,’ not racial identity. It’s more identity toward a nation-state or their people as a nation.”

Of course that was before the left embraced the term and attached to it every hateful ideology they could think of, including those that have their roots in liberalism.

the alt right does not have the same connotations today that it did when bannon said that.

How so? He said it as recently as 2016. I've seen little to no change in their modus operandi in the past year. If anything, they've become less edgy since then.

2016 is when it started being widely used

it used to have a much broader meaning. these days almost everyone who still identifies with the label is at least a white nationalist and the media uses it as if every member walks around in a white hood swinging a nazi flag around. The more moderate individuals previously associated with the label have long stopped using it.

That will neither sell papers (figuratively) nor advance the liberal propaganda.

I strongly disagree with the hatred and racism espoused by the protesters, but I'm neutral on whether or not the statue should be up. It seems like more people want to take it down, and I don't mind them doing that, but our country has bigger problems than statues of people on the wrong side of history.
