Is it actually important to learn how to code?

I stumbled across this video on Facebook:

I have to wonder, is it really that useful to learn in life or is it more for an elite few who are just interested in it for whatever reason? I started to teach myself yesterday how to code in JavaScript and I'm finding it quite fun and interesting.

I think coding is a bit useless unless you have a purpose for using it. Javascript is full of gimmicks which are pretty cool, but again, you need an application. Flash is pretty interesting. It has more applications other than the net. Apart from the usual stuff, I wrote a little questionnaire form in javascript which was used to determine a score/grade. The applications are pretty vast for the internet. I'm going through the Javascipt Cookbook, the JQuery Cookbook, and the CSS Cookbook. PHP and DHTML is also interesting. I lost all my memory after I had an accident, so I've had to rebuild my knowledge base. My son is now teaching me...

I think that the basics should be taught at school, just like the basics of maths, science, biology and accounting etc. are taught at school.

But then I am biased. I took Computer Studies as an extra subject in High School, and I have a tertiary qualification in Information Technology and I've been a software developer as my profession for the last 11 years.

Re: Is it actually important to learn how to code?

My older brother is a software developer. My boy and I are going to have a go at designing apps for iphone-ipad. We designed a workable sun-moon calendar in flash and adobe air (it needs air to operate). It shows all of the holy days, etc, along with a summary of what the days and months are - how they were named. It's pretty cool. The graphics in flash can't be beaten as an actual program. Our calander is a circle with a rustic copper-gold look to it. The two outer rims move like an ancient gear cog, and they turn in sync with the actual date, telling you when the Holy Days are. Were going to try and build a library using similar coding.

No, it's not important for everyone to "learn how to code." Of course I also think it's stupid to require everyone to solve quadratic equations.

If this actually happens, the standard text book should be authored by Dan Brown and titled "Da Computer Code".

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'

'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'
