Lord of The Ring (movie)
While I was laid up I began reading the LOTR once again. Then I decided to watch the movie for the second time. The first time I watched it I was a little disappointed, but pleased in general. This time I am more dissatisfied.
Too many "Hollywood" close calls that did not appear in the books.
Faramir is robbed of his heroism and reduced to a Boromir equal.
The Ents are reduced to cartoon characters.
I have yet to rerun the Final third of the movie.
The books are as great as ever.He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

"Close calls" are the hallmark of Tolkien. But which ones are you talking about?

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

Re: Lord of The Ring (movie)
Not Tolkien close calls, but Hollywood close calls. I was thinking particularly of the the Black Rider two feet from the Hobbits as they ran a mile to the ferry. Arwen carrying a wounded Frodo (that being a total invention) was another case where the Black Riders kept getting closer and closer, the original was a close call but a much better one.

I agree about the Ents. I was bummed to not see Tom Bombadil (sp?). I rather enjoyed Helms Deep but disliked the way they concluded the battle. I liked most of the characters esp. Galadriel, Gandalf, and Frodo. Didn't like Arwen much but I didn't like her in the books either.

Re: Lord of The Ring (movie)
The first time I watched it I was troubled but pleased that it was done as well as it was. This time I watched as I read the books and was not nearly as tolerant. Sections totally changed, garbage added that did nothing to add, but only to detract. I have only watched the first two so far. I may never watch again, though I will read again for sure (as for sure as such things can be).
ETA: I was also sorry to see no Tom Bombadil, but seeing as how they handled the Ents it was probably just as well.Last edited by Jedidiah; March 4th 2013 at 05:23 PM. Reason: Slow brain work

I believe Tom Bombadil was in the extended version of the first movie.

Peter Jackson did make some pretty stupid decisions (the bastardization of Faramir is one) but I think some people are overly puritan and anal in their judgements. On the other hand, I'm kinda biased because I never would have discovered the richness of Tolkien's lore without first being introduced to it by the movies.

I expect I would be less offended if I had not begun reading LOTR in the 1950's. But why add useless stuff and leave out valuable stuff? Still I won't be throwing my discs away.

Tom Bombadil would have brought the movies to a screeching halt, kinda like how he brought the books to a screeching halt. He's a bizarre character that comes out of nowhere and virtually never shows up again. The fact that Jackson didn't have him in the movies is more than just excusable, it was a bare necessity.

Re: Lord of The Ring (movie)
I have to agree to the degree that the omission of Bombadil was not serious. I mostly objected to the "Hollywoodization" for no good reason, and to the detriment of the ultimate project.
