Ecliptomania - an obsession to see personally every possible eclipse, total. partial, and imaginary in one's lifetime.

. . . also attributing many possible earth shaking events in human history to eclipses such as wars, peace, and hang nails.

I've seen ecliptophobia on Facebook: People who literally seem to believe the moon acts as some sort of intensifying lens. Rather than take chances, they stay indoors, close curtains, and avoid windows.

I now honestly fear for the country. No wonder Jesse Watters has no trouble finding ludicrous dingbats for his MOTS segments.

Ecliptomania would not be a fear as a phobia would indicate. It is a compulsive identifying with eclipses with a desire to experience all eclipses possible.

The only eclipse I've really experienced was in 1972, but I was too far south to see the actual totality. I was working on a survey crew at the time and for a few minutes work ceased, then we went back to it. No mania involved.

Yes. In the good ole’ days, before science ruined everything <sarcasm>, eclipses were right up there with lightning strikes and where the sun went at night as examples of the supernatural. Eclipses were often seen as portents of death and destruction, courtesy of angry gods.

On the local news here they mentioned how with some people, after experiencing a total eclipse, get the desire to experience it again and again and will travel all over the world to do so.

IIRC, the Mayans were said to bang on pottery during a solar eclipse in order to bring the sun back. They were 100% successful.

                  Eclipse! Eclipse! Eclipse!

                  Eclipse! Eclipse! Eclipse!
                  We know years in advance
                  We anticipate in batted breath.
                  Nothing is given to chance!

                  Millions flock to path
In anticipation of cheers and tears
Billions spent to glee of small towns
And millions of kegs of bear.

                  Telescopes, cameras and cell phones
Maybe safe glasses donned with confidence
Aimed at the sky in anticipation
Even God has never drew such audience

The skies dimmed slight with yellowish tint
The moments approach cries of glee
And the Sun began to sliced
For only the select millions to see

The skies darkened as the moon sliced
                  First a quarter, then half.
                  Cheers rose from the crowd
As the stars appeared as the moon sliced three fourths

Suddenly the corona surrounded the decapitated sun.
                  Humiliated by the humble moon.
                  The planets watched on as
As crowd roared and moon slowly passed
                  Revealing the Sun again

                  The stars and planets faded,
And the Carolina blue skies appeared,
                  The crowds again cheered
And milled about and off the wandered

                  Did anything really happen?
                  The world returned as before
Will we all hold our breath in anticipation?
For the next Eclipse in 2024.

                    Very true.

Actually I though they sacrificed a virgin, but whatever it takes.

If an eclipse wants me to see it, it will have to come to me. I won't go to it.
