Crossing the point of no return…
Shalom!
Have you ever gone past the point of no return, the point when it the distance to your destination is closer than your point of departure? This morning as I was thinking about life in general the thought occurred to me that same principle can be applied to our lives as well. For example, when Patti and I make the trip from Port Huron, Michigan to Townsend, Tennessee somewhere around Cincinnati, Ohio we cross the point of no return. That same principle can be applied to other areas of life as well, if while driving we ignore a red light the instant we enter the intersection we’ve gone beyond the point of no return and if we’re lucky enough we’ll not cause an accident.
Jesus knew His entire life He had come into the world to die for us, he also knew there would be a point when he would need to decide “do I” or “don’t I” decide to cross the point of no return, a point when he knew there would be no turning back. I am glad Jesus decided to cross it thereby ensuring us the opportunity for eternal life. There are times when life itself takes us beyond the point of no return. A point when we must decide to “go with the flow” or make the decision to choose “not to go with the flow,” this is especially true when the “flow” wants to take us in a wrong direction. On the other side of that “coin” there are times when we must choose to decide to “go with the flow” that is especially true when the “still small voice of the Spirit” calls out to us on behalf of Jesus, “…Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NLT)
What does it mean to rest in Jesus? Normally when we think of rest we associate it with sitting down and doing nothing or going to bed for a good night of sleep. However, Jesus isn’t talking about resting as we understand it, He is asking us to enter into a partnership with Him whereby we experience Him at work in our lives, that means depending on Him to not only carries our burdens but carry us as well. Resting in Jesus is a matter of faith, not faith that Jesus will assume our burdens thus taking them from us but faith that together with Him we will experience Peace. How can you know you are resting in Jesus? I know I am resting in Jesus when I experience the strength to face them head on and with the faith to believe I will not be defeated by them.
.
“May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **
Grace and PEACE,
Gary
