Well who was Capernicus to question the scientific consensus about the solar system?

Ironically, the prevailing scientific belief at the time was that geocentrism was "beyond debate". In other words, scientists like Copernicus, Bruno, and Galileo were in conflict with "The Consensus", that hallowed body that you put so much faith in. If you had been alive at the time, you would have been screaming for them to be burned at the stake, too.

But contrary to what some believe, what got them in trouble was when they tried to turn it into a religious matter after the Church told them to take it up with their fellow scientists. In other words, the Church basically said, "Prove it scientifically, then we can talk." In the case of Bruno, Wikipedia informs me that "Beginning in 1593, Bruno was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on charges including denial of several core Catholic doctrines, including eternal damnation, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the virginity of Mary, and transubstantiation. Bruno's pantheism was also a matter of grave concern, as was his teaching of the transmigration of the soul (reincarnation)," so nothing to do with his scientific hypothesis.

If they are trying to "win the court of opinion" then they ARE playing politics. Science isn't about opinion. It is about fact.

Copernicus was a scientist, unlike most theists, thats what scientists do, they question scientific hypotheses, beliefs.

Good thing we had an atheist like Copernicus to set science straight, eh?

Yes, its always a good thing when people question and investigate their beliefs. Thank goodness for the scientists, christian or otherwise, else we'd still be living the biblical illusion.

The Bible is the Whole Truth Jim. That's why we don't need science. If God had wanted to give us more knowledge than that, he would have. Eating from the tree of knowledge was the original sin.

Science deals in probabilities, not absolute proofs. When the probability of something approaches 100%, as per the science of climate change, then we can regard the science, colloquially, as “settled science”.

But I do like how you try to subtly shift the burden of proof.
If those denying climate change are wrong, as they probably are, then the 6th mass extinction will be upon us.

Does that work for religious debates, too? "What if Christians aren't wrong?" Are you convinced now?
Unlike climate science, there is no verifiable evidence supporting Christianity.

It was a consensus, predating modern science, based upon biblical "truths" and philosophical argument...not upon empirically tested facts.

I don't know how that is possible considering:

                        1. The origins of the scientific method come from Galileo, who was born 21 years after Copernicus died.
                        2. Copernicus' placed the sun at the center of the whole universe, which is still wrong.
                        3. Copernicus was a priest and theologian as well.

But I suppose ignoring little details how you could end up making such a silly statement.

And what is this 'biblical illusion' you speak of?

And another famous Starlight strawman for him to beat up. What a surprise because I wasn't aware any Christian said that the Bible is the only source of truth and everything else is lies. Not even the most literalist Fundy believes that, but we all know he will never back up his assertions with any sort of actual evidence. Making up things and claiming you know everything there is to know about Christianity and the beliefs of your opponents is easier, so stick with that. With nonsense like this, he wonders why we all laugh whenever his mouth opens.

                              • Speaking of Climate Change... Nicaragua, who have long protested the Paris Agreement for not being strong enough has finally signed. This leaves only 2 countries opposed to the Paris Agreement... one is a fast-collapsing Russian puppet state run by a dictator, and the other is Syria.(credit for joke)
