The Church was doing then what many Evangelicals do today, i.e. erroneously subordinating scientific knowledge and scientific experiment to religious presuppositions.
But contrary to what some believe, what got them in trouble was when they tried to turn it into a religious matter after the Church told them to take it up with their fellow scientists. In other words, the Church basically said, "Prove it scientifically, then we can talk." In the case of Bruno, Wikipedia informs me that "Beginning in 1593, Bruno was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on charges including denial of several core Catholic doctrines, including eternal damnation, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the virginity of Mary, and transubstantiation. Bruno's pantheism was also a matter of grave concern, as was his teaching of the transmigration of the soul (reincarnation)," so nothing to do with his scientific hypothesis. Some may call me foolish, and some may call me odd

If they are trying to "win the court of opinion" then they ARE playing politics. Science isn't about opinion. It is about fact.

Nice own goal, Jim.Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

Does that work for religious debates, too? "What if Christians aren't wrong?" Are you convinced now?

1. The origins of the scientific method come from Galileo, who was born 21 years after Copernicus died.
2. Copernicus' placed the sun at the center of the whole universe, which is still wrong.
3. Copernicus was a priest and theologian as well.
But I suppose ignoring little details how you could end up making such a silly statement.Last edited by lilpixieofterror; 09-20-2017, 11:37 PM."The man from the yacht thought he was the first to find England; I thought I was the first to find Europe. What a surprise because I wasn't aware any Christian said that the Bible is the only source of truth and everything else is lies. Not even the most literalist Fundy believes that, but we all know he will never back up his assertions with any sort of actual evidence. Making up things and claiming you know everything there is to know about Christianity and the beliefs of your opponents is easier, so stick with that. With nonsense like this, he wonders why we all laugh whenever his mouth opens.

Speaking of Climate Change... Nicaragua, who have long protested the Paris Agreement for not being strong enough has finally signed. This leaves only 2 countries opposed to the Paris Agreement... one is a fast-collapsing Russian puppet state run by a dictator, and the other is Syria.(credit for joke)"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
