You're coo coo for coco puffs if you think the world would be under Communism if it wasn't for America.

And you are clueless, Eastern Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, etc... Communism was spreading like wild fire, and the US was the most powerful bulwark against it.

Like I said, you gave the world next to nothing.

More or less. Most people don't have a whole lot of pride in their country; the United States is something of an exception to this. Of course, the US tending to have the largest economy, being at the forefront of science, , consistently doing well in the Olympics, being the one the world turns to in times of crisis, etc. likely has something to do with this. America also tends to be the most hated, because it is the most envied.

I suggest that a lot of the people around the world who hate America do so for reasons than have nothing to do with envy and much more to do with America having done bad things, and that some Americans are a bit too quick to jump to "they hate us for our freedom".

I think you underestimate just how powerful a force envy is. Of course, that's very likely a blind spot with you, given your own obsession with America.

Um, you think that the world being fascinated by the ongoing clown-show that is US politics is envy?

Anyway, I will say that when I see people chanting "USA, USA..." or saying "the US is number one!" my emotional response is to feel embarrassed for them. You're welcome to quiz other international posters here on what they think when they see/hear those things, if you think my own feelings are unrepresentative.

Nothing wrong with pride and love for one's country, but I think some Ameriicans do go overboard a bit, and many Americans are ignorant of, or disregard, the rest of the world. The Baseball 'World Series' is an example. The degree of American pride in their country does look a little strange to those who were brought up in places where that's not such a big part of life.

We seem to be in a weird middle ground in the UK. Personally I can understand pride in ones achievements etc, but not pride is something you had nothing to do with. WWII is a popular example- but almost no one alive today had any part in that war.

For example we currently have lots of flag waving Brexit nonsense, especially in the print media. Conversely, the same reason they're moronically beating their chests and waving their flags is the reason I'm a little embarrassed to be likened to them.

As I said, the country is a little conflicted at the moment..!

As one commentator put it, the world hates the US for the same reason baseball fans hate the Yankees: because we just keep winning.

And as several have noted, the world only seems to like us when we're down or hurting like right after 9/11.

I'm always still in trouble again

Or when Obama was in office.
