Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

Even Amish can use some kinds of modern tech. The elders of different communities will carefully allow things on a trial basis, observe the results, and decide whether or not to continue.

As I understand it (we have a lot of Mennonites here, and I read a book on it years ago), Mennonites range from very strict to not strict at all. There are plenty of Mennonite groups that are more or less indistinguishable from stricter Amish, and then there are Amish who you wouldn't be able to tell from anyone else.

        IIRC JB is Mennonite.

I do struggle to reconcile this with the fact that John the Baptist did not condemn the centurions which is why I'm not 100% convinced.
We each must follow God as best we understand His direction. I think Scripture doesn't provide a clear answer on whether or not pacifism is God's plan. If that's where God is leading you, go in peace.

There's a Mennonite like group back in Waco. They're really nice and their sense of community is attractive. However as I understand it they reject Trinitarianism. I've never been explicitly told what they hold instead, but my suspicion is modalism, Patrick.

A friend of mine married a Mennonite who is a professor in aerospace engineering so clearly there is no universal rejection of technology.

Yeah...your name kept coming to mind but I knew somehow that wasn't right. Maybe you and Amazing Rando talked about the carpentry on TWEB at one time...

About as Mennonite as you are Presbyterian...

I do live in a very Amish- and Mennonite-heavy area, and the community where I pastor might be predominantly an Anabaptist one.

Lots of diversity among Mennonites. One of my best friends in high school was a Mennonite who was obsessed with military strategy, go figure.

A couple months back, I picked up a bunch of goodies from the local Mennonite historical society's annual book sale. I look forward to a little challenge (I have some sympathies with pacifism (as well as some critiques), but those usually wane pretty quickly every time I make the mistake of talking to an actual pacifist about it, heh).

It's admittedly slightly more difficult to defend the doctrine immediately in the wake of a mass shooting. Preston Sprinkle (who I respect a ton) maintains that Christians can only be police officers if they would not fire a gun. That would mean allowing an Adam Lanza or yesterday's shooter (had he not committed suicide) free reign.

This is why I would probably not maintain the position as absolutely as he does. His blog post about Christians who would resort to guns instead of prayer in an emergency situation rang somewhat hollow with me.

I don't have quite as high a view of Sprinkle, but yeah, that one is a very tough pill to swallow, especially in a week like this week.
