    Are melodies written, or discovered?

On a related note (ha!), what makes a melody a melody? I could poke out a bunch of random notes on a piano, but it almost certainly wouldn't be anything except for noise--maybe I'd get lucky. What's the difference?

Generally, a melody is an aesthetically pleasing sequence of notes.
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

No. Melody was my first girlfriend when I was 6.

As a music composer myself, I'd say the technical definition of a melody is the sequence of notes that sticks out and best heard over all the other accompaniment playing with it in the background. Are melodies written or discovered? From my experience, both.

I had a funny situation where I heard a guy playing the piano which, at the same time, sounded awful but also musical. I later head him playing decent guitar.

I think that melody's often are discovered -- but it is discovering something in one's head.

I developed a few songs from a short motif that seemed interesting. Then I worked a bit harder to make a full song from that kernel.

probably one of the best melodies ever found or created.

I think melody is best defined as the part that gets stuck in your head...

A melody doesn't require accompaniment, however.

Exactly. Without accompaniment it sticks out even more.

Even if it sticks out, it still needs to be aesthetically pleasing.
