Natural Science 301 Guidelines

This is an open forum area for all members for discussions on all issues of science and origins. This area will and does get volatile at times, but we ask that it be kept to a dull roar, and moderators will intervene to keep the peace if necessary. This means obvious trolling and flaming that becomes a problem will be dealt with, and you might find yourself in the doghouse.

As usual, Tweb rules apply. If you haven't read them now would be a good time.

Yep. And you can throw in the fact that science never proves anything, so he's using the wrong standard.

Don't fall for the mistaken idea that just because we don't understand everything about something that we therefore don't understand anything about it and thus all ideas concerning it are of equal merit.

That said I believe in Intelligent Falling although I'm willing to (grudgingly) conceded that there may be some micro-gravity.

I'm always still in trouble again

Gravity is an effect of time dilation in the same way acceleration slows down time - the Einstein equivalence principle of gravitational and inertial mass.

Yes but why does that happen? Why do bodies attract? Curve space time?

It's a bit like asking why electrons have a charge. That's just the way the universe is ordered. It's very possible to imagine (and theoretically consider) a universe where the rules are different.

yeah I think they would first have to figure out what "space" actually is before we can figure out how it can curve. We currently just know what it does, not what it is. We do know what it isn't. It isn't an aether or a physical substance because of the Michelson-Morley experiment and the like.

Well, to some extent we know space is a collection of quantum fields. But we don't know how to make quantum fields consistent with general relativity. The Wikipedia entry on Quantum Field Theory actually summarizes what this means pretty well:
"QFT was historically widely believed to be truly fundamental. It is now believed, primarily due to the continued failures of quantization of general relativity, to be only a very good low-energy approximation, i.e. an effective field theory, to some more fundamental theory."

ok. What's a quantum field then?

While the Nobel Peace prize has become thoroughly politicized not even it can be fairly labeled a "participation trophy".

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure we've had this conversation once already.

we did discuss quantum fields in this thread ( http://www.theologyweb.com/campus/sh...anity&p=451638 ) but nobody ever said what they WERE. If they create space, and they are not made up of particles or energy, then what are they?

Exactly, how can something so fundamental remain such a mystery?
