abortion and capital punishment
I'd like to get a sampling of views on the death penalty and abortion, to see if there is any connection between people's views on the subject. Please choose the option that best describes your views.
If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. And when you’re mean, it’s hard for people to listen to, much less desire, your truth.

I like to preserve the life of the innocent, but threaten the life of the guilty, myself.
I can't understand why you'd want to preserve the life of a capital murderer, and yet allow the murder of an innocent unborn child.
I'm certainly not set in my ways on captial punishment. I think it could be done better, and I'm not so for it that if it was outlawwed (like it is here in Michigan) that I'd start a cause for it.

My choice for "anti-death penalty" isn't really what you would think. I don't go out and protest it or otherwise try to get it outright banned, but I would prefer to see something better. (Unfortunately, in our secularization-happy society, that "something better" will be difficult to come by.)

December 23rd 2003, 12:06 PM #6I agree with your second point- why allow a muderer to live if you're okay with killing unborn children.Today @ 04:02 PM post located here

Though my ethic is pro-life, through and through. I can't possibly support the death penalty for convicted murderer- even Saddam. If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. December 23rd 2003, 12:08 PM #8I sorta feel like an outcast sometimes- not many in my camp on both issues! The only organization I can find that would match my views on both abortion and capital punishment is Priests for Life.If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. Since I was asked - I find it hard to reconcile the defense of "life" (because I don't believe it is really life) on the one hand and the execution of a real life on the other.

December 23rd 2003, 12:51 PM #10Thanks for your input, Bob! It does seem to be mainly Christians who are opposed to abortion on demand. May I ask your reasons for being anti-death penalty?Today @ 04:48 PM post located here

I'm curious- has anybody ever met a pro-life atheist? Surely there's got to be one somewhere. I'd be interested in knowing his/her reasoning. If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. Good thread, Rando. I believe killing is only justified when it is necessary to defend another life. So I think abortion should only be an option in extreme cases, e.g. where it's truly the only option to save the mother's life. Likewise, I'd stop just short of abolishing the death penalty b/c I think there are cases when it is needed as self-defense (e.g. a very dangerous convict who harms others/escapes despite being in a max-security prison).
Concerning the question of anti-abortion atheists, see Libertarians for Life (not atheistic in and of itself, but has several atheists involved).A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. (Proverbs 12:16)

Thanks India! I suppose I should have included an option for people whose views hace exceptions. Though I think that would water down the results quite a bit since very few people are against either abortion or captial punishment in each and every case.

I think most people understand that both issues have flavors on both sides. I wouldn't worry about it.
