Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

Interesting topic. According to the Expositor's Bible Commentary, more than a dozen explanations are proffered as explanations - and two are considered by the authors (Wessel and Strauss) to be reasonable. "both take their cue from the insertion by a copyist of the words “and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt” . This comment is a reference to Leviticus 2: 13: “Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.*”
Matt 5:13 and Luke 14:33 add a bit of context to work with, but it would take a while to sort it out.

Meanwhile - I kind of like Teallaura's explanation.

I went looking for ancient commentaries, and discovered that no one seems to have devoted a full-length commentary on Mark until the 6th century (though various verses are explained in other settings in passing).

Salt preserves meat from rotting too soon. We are to preserve ourselves and others from rotting, but if we lose our ability to preserve, we aren't any good to anyone.

...turns out I do have the (first edition of) the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture: New Testament II - Mark lying about.

Here's what it has to say under Mark 9:50:

          Source: ACC Mark

Methodius: "According to levitical law (Lev. 2:13), every gift, unless it be seasoned with salt, is forbidden to be offered as an oblation to the Lord God. Now the whole spiritual meditation of the Scriptures is given to us as salt which stings in order to benefit. Without this disinfection, it is impossible for a soul, by means of reason, to be brought to the Almighty." - The Banquet of the Ten Virgins 1.1

Ephrem the Syrian: Glory be to God on high, who mixed His salt in our minds, His leaven in our souls. His body became bread, to quicken our deadness. - Hymns on the Nativity 2

Gregory the Great: When the counselor prepares himself for speaking, let him bear in mind with what diligent caution he ought to speak, lest, if he is too hurried in speaking, the hearts of hearers be struck with the wound of error. Desiring to seem wise, he may unwisely sever the bond of unity. It is for this reason that the One who is truth has said: "Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another." Now by salt is denoted the word of wisdom. Let him, therefore, who strives to speak wisely fear greatly, lest by his eloquence the integrity of his hearers be disturbed. - Pastoral Care 4.12

The thrust seems to be identifying "salt" with the wisdom of Christ; if we lose it, how can we gain it back?

To be honest, I didn't quite get what KG was asking right at first - I thought he had the 'salt CAN'T lose its saltiness' issue in mind.
