Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Okay all, now if god rested, however you want to define that term, if god rested or if he had just finshed his work after 6 days, did it take him an actual 6 days, or did it take him billions of years before he had finished?

Another question, how can creation be said to have taken God 6 days to complete, if god doesn't act in time.

And another fact, it was something like 13+ billion years before an Adam and Eve could have existed on earth after the beginning of the universe. So, was 1 day of creation in the genesis account meant to mean 1.7 billion years or thereabouts, and do you think it took god somewhere near 13+ billion years to get around to creating humans?

Note: Consensus view is that the Genesis 1 account is a late addition to Genesis.

Genesis 1 claims that God created the heavens and the Earth. It also claims that when the Earth was created, it had no shape; neither content. Pretty much throughout the existence of the record of Genesis 1, theologians have tried to impose some sort of logical interpretation on that statement. I take it as meaning precisely what it says.

Beyond the actual creation of Earth, and Adam's creation thereon and immediate removal from it, nothing in Genesis 2 refers to Earth - everything is centred on Eden ... aka Paradise (or rather, a portion thereof.)
1Cor 15:34 Come to your senses as you ought and stop sinning; for I say to your shame, there are some who know not God.

The beginning of the heaven(s) was say 13.8 billion years ago. The earth beginnings was about 8.3 billion years after the start of the heavens. Making it 4.5 billion years old for the oldest rocks in the solar system. The solar system had cooled and the Sun had not yet lit up from it inner fusion reaction. Genesis 1:2. The earth was not fully formed in its cool state. Day one the Sun lit up. Day 4 the debris in the solar system blows past the earth to reveal the Sun, Moon and stars. Day 6 the events of Genesis 2:5-25. That is how I perceive it.

Like I said, an Adam an Eve couldn't have existed for 13+, nearly 14 billion years, after the beginning of creation, so if it took 6 biblical days of creating prior to A+E being created, then one biblical day must be equal to approximately 2.3 billion years.

              Oh dear!

It would be a lot more honest to admit that Genesis does not give an accurate account of the beginning of the universe nor of the first humans, rather than attempt this tortuous rationalisation to make it conform to established scientific knowledge.

You didn't understand what I said. Essentially what I said if you had read it, is that the 6 day creation took place after the creation of the heaven and earth (Genesis 1:1, 2). Those 6 earth days began with the light (v.3) on the yet darkened earth. That was the 1st day of the 6. The 6 days had only to do with the earth. (The rocks in the solar system being already some 4.5 billion years before hand.)

Now which part of Genesis 1 actually says that all this immediate and direct creation occurred on Earth?

There are Christians that hold what is called the gap theory. The original creation (Genesis 1.1). That the "was" should be translated "became without form . . ." (v.2). What was destroyed accounts for the geological ages . And Genesis 1:3-. . . on was a recreation.

I do not hold that view. I did hold the day age view as a new Christian with the understanding that whole week was also called a day Genesis 2:4.

I now hold the view that Genesis 1:1-2 represents the origin of the universe and state of the earth before the 6 earth day creation.

If Genesis 1:1-2 is to be taken as accurate, the Earth did not have any form - neither did it have any content when it was created. That doesn't even say it had physical existence. And the six-"Earth"-day creation, insofar as I can tell, did not happen on Earth.

None of it. Genesis 1:1 states in the beginning. Genesis 1:2 gives a condition of the earth before the 6 day creation.

And that condition was ...? non-existent, perhaps? It didn't have any shape, and it didn't have any content. I can't think of anything material that exists with neither.

Okay, so god created the universe approximately 14 billion years ago, then let it just sit there for approximately 9 or so billion years until once again he began to work on it until finally finishing up with the creation of Adam and Eve just so many million years ago or so. Okay, so lets say 4 billion years equals the 7 days of creation. that would mean that one biblical day is equal to 571,428,571 earth days.

Ooops, forgot there were only 6 days of actual creation, god rested on the 7th. So that would make each biblical day equal to 666,666,667 earthly days. Sure took a long time just to speak things into existence, don't you think?

What are you talking about? Genesis 1:1 is the initial creation. The 6 days are v.3 on. Where God made the earth habitable. And made man on the 6th day.

But as I perceive the account. The beginning of the heaven(s) was about 13.8 billion years ago and the solar system before its Sun gave its light some 4.5 billion years ago. The first earth day the Sun lit up the sky. The 4th earth day the debris was blown past the earth to allow the Sun, Moon and stars to be visible as lights in the sky. The 6th day God made man and woman in the garden (Genesis 2:5-25).
