That was pretty much right before the 2 party system obtained its death grip on the process. IIRC there were at least 4 major parties vying for the presidency when Lincoln won.

Sorta. The Democrats couldn't unite around a single candidate, and so ran 2. They were really the only major party at the time, as the Whig party had pretty much dissolved by that point, and it was only the second Presidential election cycle for the Republicans. There were about 4 candidates who got significant votes, complicated by the fact that not all candidates were on all ballots.

I don't think the Whigs ever managed to claim a majority of either congressional house, though they managed to get a handful of presidents elected. They were the only opposition to the Democrats, however, after the Federalists went out with a whimper.

Just because the DNC was wrong for rigging the primaries against Sanders doesn't mean Sanders is right today for not acting in good faith toward the Democratic Party.

I mean, for however much the DNC (though not necessarily the party as a whole) screwed him over, I believe he did promise that he would seek re-election as a Democrat when he ran for the Democratic candidacy, and he's apparently reneging on that.

Ah, wasn't aware of that. Thanks.

Trump is for all purposes an Independent. The Republican party pretty much abandoned him during the primaries and even now a good chunk of the Republicans don't like or will work with him.

Uh-huh. Did he know (at the time he made that commitment) that the DNC had thrown him under the bus? Reneging would seem to be entirely in order.
