I've seen a few references to the cause of their dispute being "trivial," and "nothing to do with politics." Does anybody know any more about this?

      That makes it *much* better.

I remember reading that also, so I looked it up again to try to find the source. Apparently, the claim of it being trivial and unrelated to politics came from Michael Baker, the lawyer of the assaulter. That could be completely true, but he obviously has incentive to try to make things look better for his client (then again, I'm not sure "attacked a senator over a trivial, nonpolitical matter" actually makes him look better).

Full statement can be found here.

Yeah but if he is a socialist he should be sharing all that wealth instead of hoarding it for himself! And he should be giving away his services instead of charging capitalist money for them!

Interesting to see the media giving Rand Paul more attention for this incident than they did his entire run through the primaries, even when he was doing relatively decently in the polls.

Yep. Pretty sure Jed meant something else, though.

The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

From a legal perspective, a trivial, nonpolitical matter looks much better - that's just a state crime. Attacking a senator over politics is a federal crime, and apparently means 8 to 20 years behind bars.

Well, whatever the reason for the assault, we can be sure it wasn't for political differences. Democrats are too tolerant for that.

Source: FRIEND SAYS RAND PAUL DOES NOT KNOW WHAT PROMPTED ATTACK

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul does not know why a longtime neighbor tackled him in his yard and broke five of his ribs, sidelining him from the Senate, a close friend of the lawmaker said Tuesday.

Rob Porter, who says he has known Paul for 20 years, visited the senator on Saturday just one day after the attack. He said Paul was mowing his yard and had stopped to remove a limb when 59-year-old Rene Boucher, Paul's neighbor for 17 years, tackled him from behind, slamming him to the ground. Porter said Paul was wearing ear protection and did not hear Boucher coming.

For days, mystery has swirled around what led to the assault, from Washington, D.C., to the high-end gated community where both men live. Rumors spread in the community that the attack stemmed from a festering neighborhood dispute about lawn debris. But Porter said in all the years he has known Paul, he has never heard him mention Boucher or any type of yard issue with his neighbor.

"Rand doesn't really have any interaction with the guy. If there was a dispute, I do believe Rand wasn't aware of it," Porter said. "I have been to their house socially and for a variety of reasons for going on 20 years, I've never heard (Paul) mention (Boucher), good or bad."

The FBI is investigating the assault to see if it was politically motivated. Boucher's attorney, Matt Baker, said the attack had "absolutely nothing to do" with politics but was "a very regrettable dispute" that was "trivial." He would not elaborate, saying he needs to "do my due diligence" before offering specifics about the case.

From what I read they didn't actually live adjacent to each other but more kitty-corner and possibly with a street separating them so I wonder how it could be an argument about lawn debris. And if one has a problem with the other not taking care of their property a simple call to zoning enforcement generally takes care of that.

And as that singular naughty swine has note it is very much in the interest of Boucher to push the idea that it was about some trivial matter rather than having anything to do with politics
