  • Thanks pacific

So thanks to the Pacific. Charles Manson instead of being in prison hospice gets accomodations at a hospital in Bakersfield that we the taxpayers get to shell out $$$$$ for. I think this comes more from state $$$. but several people posed the question why are we "footing the bill" for him to have a comfortable hospice death when the rest of us have to wait in lines or pay insane amounts out of pocket for an x-ray?

Here is something to think about:

Death row inmate too sick to be executed, lawyers say

Lawyers for a death row inmate are asking Ohio Gov. John Kasich to spare their client’s life, arguing that the 69-year-old killer of an 18-year-old man is in such poor health that he should be spared.

I suppose they need to make him well enough to execute.

I don't want people to suffer needlessly. Even monsters. If grace--in this world or the world to come, physical or spiritual-- was contingent on our goodness, there would be no salvation of any kind.

I'm not sure what option there is. Prisoners are charges of the state, and the state, therefore, has the obligation to care for them even though this doesn't seem fair when law-abiding citizens are struggling to pay their medical bills.

For me, it's a question of how we treat law-abiding citizens, not how we treat criminals.

It reminds me of a pastor friend of mine - quite well educated - who always says "pacific" when me means "specific" --- "I'm pacifically talking about..."

Years ago in my former life as a TV news photographer, we were covering a "hundred year flood" in one of the major cities in our viewing area. The mayor gets on camera and says, "This tragedy will go down in the anals of our city's history."

And then another of our local politicians used to love talking about the new "ambalances" he was able to get for the county rescue squads.

Finally, the city council member who couldn't say more than a few words without adding an "uh". So he uuuh talked uh like this, and uuuuhhh, it uh was rather uuuuuuhh hilarious. It got even better when one of the other photogs put together a several-minute highlight reel of this guy saying nothing but "Uh uuuhhh uh uh-uh uuuuhhhh."

Sounds like our latest ex-President when he wasn't reading from a teleprompter. I'm guessing the journalistic world has yet to do the same with him.

Like I said, prisoners are charges of the state, so the state is obligated to take care of them, including food, shelter, and healthcare. Law-abiding citizens are on their own. I don't know what you think the solution is, but turning every citizen into a charge of the state is not it.

I suppose there are multiple solutions short of turning every citizen into a charge of the state. I'm commenting more on the idea from a "Do unto others..." point of view.
