  • Trump cuts UN budget

    ...by more than quarter billion!

In a statement released over the holiday, the US Mission to the United Nations said next year’s budget would be slashed by over $285m and unspecified reductions would also be made to the UN’s management and support functions.

Now we need to start ticketing and towing the ambassadors' illegally parked cars, and eventually toss them out of New York City.

I agree. I'd ultimately love to see the US pull out of the UN completely and kick that corrupt organization off of US soil with the money saved passed on to the tax payer in the form of more tax cuts.

That is exactly where I am. "Get the US out of the UN, and get the UN out of the US."

The US actually leaving the UN would free up the rest of the world to take actual official action against Israel on the issue of apartheid. Currently the US is a member of the security council and so can, and has, regularly unilaterally vetoed UN resolutions regarding Israel.

Since the US providing funding to the UN and having a seat on the security council allows it leverage to manipulate the UN into doing more of its bidding than the UN would otherwise do, I doubt any of the conservatives here would actually like the consequences of the US withdrawing from the UN.

What is the only Middle Eastern country:

Where religious holy sites are open to Jews, Christians, and Muslims?
Where minority groups are given full rights?
Where women are given full rights?
That is the only functional liberal democracy?

The answer is Israel. Again, more evidence that every time your mouth opens, it’s something stupid that we should all laugh at. The reality is all the UN will do is more hypocritical condemning while ignoring Iran’s and the rest of the Middle East terrible human rights record because the UN is a laughing stock nobody takes seriously.

That's a highly parochial position and ultimately detrimental to US interests. E.g. the condemnation of the US at the UN General Assembly over its Jerusalem policy revealed both Washington’s contempt for democracy and international law, and just how isolated America has become globally. Only seven marginal states voted with the US and Israel: Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo. Another 35 nations chose to abstain, including Canada and Australia, which would typically openly back America’s Mideast policies. The US is in decline as a great power and has decreasing influence in world affairs..

In my opinion that's a good thing because I view the US as typically a bad-actor on the world stage.

e.g. it's one of the largest international funders of terrorism, it supports 75% of the world's dictators, it overthrows democratic governments and replaces them with dictators, it supports apartheid in Israel, it does drone strikes against civilians in more than a half dozen countries, it has over a hundred special forces operations occurring in Africa alone at any given time, it's complicit in the current genocide occurring in Yemen etc.

That is not, of course, to say that the US sometimes doesn't do some good on the world stage. But overall I think they do more bad than good.

Hopefully the US will leave the UN security council and this will allow the UN to openly call the US out on its bad actions without having the vote vetoed by the US.

That's certainly the case under the current administration.

The UN is the HOA of the world, always trying to tell people how to run their own homes. Except they don't have any actual power. They are just the nosy neighbor.

That was true under Obama. It's not so true under Trump.

This is the same UN, of course, that made Saudi Arabia part of its Human Rights Commission. Yeah. Let that sink in.

UN ‘peacekeepers’ were also caught raping the women and children they were supposed to protect too.

Quite the reverse; you’ve been reading too much Breitbart. “Donald Trump’s presidency has had a major impact on how the world sees the United States. Trump and many of his key policies are broadly unpopular around the globe, and ratings for the U.S. have declined steeply in many nations. According to a new Pew Research Center survey spanning 37 nations, a median of just 22% has confidence in Trump to do the right thing when it comes to international affairs. This stands in contrast to the final years of Barack Obama’s presidency, when a median of 64% expressed confidence in Trump’s predecessor to direct America’s role in the world.” "Across the 37 nations polled, Trump gets higher marks than Obama in only two countries: Russia and Israel".
