They were seriously misinformed too. Especially with things like Double Dragon on the market.

Oh, did you ever see the PETA ad where they had Mario tearing the face off a raccoon/tanuki in order to make it look like Super Mario Bros. 3 was evil for their use of "fur". That was certainly far more violent than the game ever was.

There seems to be something about gaming that is more addictive than other entertainment diversions, to the point where the WHO has chosen the other day to list gaming addiction as a disorder: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-42541404

There have been quite a few people who have literally played to death (Simon Parkin recently wrote a book exploring this phenomenon, which seems most associated with countries like South Korea and Japan). The thing is you don't see this result with other diversions like generic TV watching, sports, movies, etc. Something is clearly different.

Games are interactive. Unlike movies or TV shows, they really don't end until the player wants them to end. But it's still a behavioral issue because it is impossible to become dependent on a video game.

Yes, they're a lot more fun. Tv, sports, movies also don't truly let you escape a life you hate like video games do (which is what I suspect drives the phenomenon in SK and Japan)

It may not be possible to become dependent on a video game, but the brain state caused by playing the game can be addictive in the sense that one's life revolves around it - much like porn.

Again, that's a behavioral problem and not a dependency.

This is a semantic distinction that I don't think is necessary in the context of my post.

Then let me clarify: if it's not a dependency then it's not an addiction. Sometimes I think people use the term "addiction" in an attempt to remove personal responsibility. "It's not my fault I lost my job for looking at porn! I have an addiction!" No, you lack self-control.

Violence means profits. This is just one of the many ways that capitalism kills children.

Yes, it's the fault of capitalism.

Neither the tobacco industry, the oil industry, the food industry, the motorcar industry, TheDonald and now the games industry, care about your health, mental or otherwise or the future in general. They exist to make a profit and they design their product, their workforce and everything else to maximise that profit.

It's not up to them to take care of me. But I suppose a dependent snowflake like you doesn't understand that.

Why do those that boast about being ‘about science’, turn around and peddle scientific garbage, such as this? There’s no scientific evidence that violence in video games ‘kills kids’. I’ve played games for years, including ones with violence, and haven’t figured robbing banks and shooting police is okay.
