Too bad, because that means you're just naturally dopey.

It's not a "scam." However, it is applied narrowly to one specific type of family, and tears down all others. And it is amazing how many times its loudest proponents are found to be having affairs or turning their backs on their own children because they happen to be gay or trans. And when "family values" meets "free markets," families usually lose. The impression left to those of us looking on is, "family values" matters - until it might compromise those "free markets." From the outside, it looks like money trumps family.

Do you think that valuing a specific type of family and attacking other types of family can be reasonably said to be "pro-family"? I don't.

If they called it "pro-heterosexual-nuclear-family" or "anti-gay-families and anti-polygamous-families" I could agree that's what it was. But it's not "pro-family" per se, that's just inaccurate.

Conservatives who say they support "the traditional family" are being more accurate I think, though I think it's a bit questionable in regard to whose tradition we are talking about or which period or time is being referred to (some would argue the nuclear family is an invention of the 20th century, and that multi-generational and extended family structures predominated in much of Western society prior to that and hence that almost no US-born evangelicals today have a traditional family structure), but at least it's obvious to everyone what they mean: They are for a particular family structure that they view as 'traditional', and against families who are structured wrongly. But they aren't pro-family in the sense of pushing for policies that are supportive of families in general in the country.

Nope - I think you jumped to conclusions cause you already had your argument in mind.

Actually - I saw "scam," which is why I quoted it. But it is obviously not "scam" when you read it... so my bad.

However, the general points of my post stand.

I had a friend who while in the hospital for a nervous breakdown was asked if he had ever taken any recreational drugs. Smart alec that he was he replied by asking "do you want me to list them in alphabetical, chronological or categorical order?"

That added two days to his stay.

Still I loved the answer and have used it many different times in a wide variety of different settings and circumstances (though none about drug usage) and have added "or by order of importance"

That reminds me of a story about late metal singer Peter Steele, who was asked what drugs he had taken when he overdosed in another country. He added "redheads" to his list, and staff furiously tried to translate what this was street slang for in English.
