Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

Sorry about the Amen. That was an accident.

You make it sound as if she would be available for marriage to another after this warming temporary duty. It appears later that Abishag became David’s wife or at least a concubine, since his son Adonijah wanted her as his wife as a way to assume the throne (which he was later executed for by Solomon). That changes things. There’d be no need to say David didn’t have sex with her if she was to later become his concubine AND she was too young to have sex with.

Even if he did, what would really be the import? David is not exactly presented as a consistent paragon of moral virtue.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Adonijah did not need her as his wife to angle for the throne. However, because of her association with David, marrying her would have bolstered his status in the eyes of the nation. There was no need for sex to have occurred. I have no idea where you got the idea that she was too young.

I thought that Solomon’s rage about the request indicates more than that

“Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.” 1 Kings 2:24

That was immediately following Bathsheba’s request.

Maybe David didn’t have sex with her because she was too young at the time. It seems more plausible that she had a bigger role as a concubine later. If she was just a glorified heating pad, why would Adonijah think such an acquisition would do anything for him? He was of royal lineage. Wouldn’t he already have status and influence enough? Solomon’s act seems rash to slay a man for asking to marry an insignificant virgin servant.

I posed the question because it’s a theocracy rather than a run-of-the-mill monarchy wherein a servant could be killed for bringing anything less than a supermodel.
how do you know what "beautiful" meant to them? Maybe beautiful meant plump? A fat girl would keep him warmer than a skinny one. There is no way to know for sure, but it does seem like an odd thing to fixate on for a thread.

I don't think run of the mill monarchies of the time would meet that specification.

What's the point of this thread? Are we seriously questioning why men prefer women they find attractive over those that they don't?

Solomon did that because it was proof that Adonijah was indeed angling for the throne.

Neither of those is plausible given the text.

I really don't feel like re-explaining ANE society to you when you just keep coming back with "How about x? What about y?" She was associated with the prior king. That would've given him two methods of association, not one.

That would take electricity and a blanket can't give me a back rub.

Ya know, not for nothing, but when a fat person gets cold, it's the fat that's really cold. Muscle is much warmerer.

If Jews weren't so opposed to dogs, King David could have had a Three Dog Night!
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
