The Secret was released as a film in March 2006, and later the same year as a book. The book is influenced by Wallace Wattles' 1910 book The Science of Getting Rich, which Byrne received from her daughter during a time of personal trauma in 2004.

The book has been translated into 50 languages and has sold over 20 million copies. Due partly to an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the book and film had grossed $300 million in sales by 2009. Byrne has subsequently released Secret merchandise and several related books.

Byrne re-introduces a pseudo-scientific notion originally popularized by persons such as Madame Blavatsky and Norman Vincent Peale, which suggests that thinking about certain things will make them appear in one's life. At least until the IRS comes knocking, and then you have to sell your "free" car in order to pay the taxes on it.

But anyway, are there really enough people who would take Oprah seriously enough as a candidate to get her nominated, let alone elected? I'm not so sure. Trump was a successful businessman long before he became the "reality TV star" for which liberals love to deride him. Oprah, on the other hand, has pretty much been nothing but a TV star. It's also going to be hard to run against Trump's record if he keeps up the pace he set in his first year as president. What will be Oprah's message? "Do you hate a vigorous economy, lower taxes, and low unemployment? Then vote for someone who will change all of that!" Yeah, that's a winning ticket. Or is she going to be like Romney in some of his debates where he all but applauded Obama's record?

I have a sneaking feeling that after Trump the pendulum will likely swing back and being a political outsider will no longer be a plus and most people will be looking for someone with experience.
