actually not that different from today. neither dems nor reps want to close the mexico border because they want to be able to keep exploiting poor mexicans.

I'm not even sure it's that.

And this is assuming that Trump even said it, which he implies he didn't.

Largely, it's the governments we don't like, not the people. There's a significant difference though I don’t imagine Trump makes it.

Although, there used to be a very large number of industrial semi-skilled jobs that many of these immigrants could get on with. No any more with the advent of globalisation and automation.

The ideal situation is that the "hellholes" become better and more attractive places to live and work, so that people don't want to leave. But that requires seismic changes in the way that global politics and economics works.

Haiti should be an island paradise - The Clinton Foundation fixed all that.

Of course he said it, there were 5 or 6 republicans in the room along with 1 democrat, Dick Durbin, and not one has come to the Presidents defense. If it weren't true Lindsey Graham, Trumps new best bud, would have been the first to refute it to the media.

I'm inclined to believe he probably said it.

I'm close to 65 and I have been hearing how bad Haiti is since I was a kid. I wonder why they just can't seem to get it together.

I was there a number of times in the early 80's, and it's obvious that, at one time, there was quite a bit of tourism. We stayed in a hotel in Cap Haitian that I can only describe as "a bad Motel 6 without hot water", but, again, at one time, it appears to have been a luxury hotel. It even had a large swimming pool with a "swim up bar".

Here is a pretty good (IMOHBAO) assessment of Haiti's plight, including the fact that it was pretty much a French colony of slaves, harshly ruled. What's puzzling is why the Dominican Republic, sharing the same island, seems to have "gotten it", but Haiti is still Haiti.

Anecdotally, there just seems to be an overwhelming "live for today" and don't worry about tomorrow attitude. That was evident when we brought some farm specialists from Waco, doing the rabbit / manure / farming thing, producing rabbits for meat, using their waste for fertilizer, etc. The very first night we were there, Haitians broke into the storage facility and stole all the rabbits, cooking them and eating them the next day. An "immediate feast" with no planning for future.

The President suggests he didn't. Durbin is the only one claiming he did, and Durbin, well, he's not exactly the most credible source.

Besides, you've got this backwards: it's Durbin's claim, so he bears the burden of proving it. It's not up to anybody to disprove it.

According to CNN's Jake Tapper, the President did use the term in question ("____hole"), but he used it in a general sense. The narrative that he used the term to describe specific countries appears to an invention.

And that's what I would have guessed - he did say it, but they kinda overshot the runway with "application". Again, Durbin sounded like a little kid on the playground aghast that another kid said a wirty dord, and tattling to the teacher.

He claims he didn’t, which is what those of us with a lower opinion of him expect, however I’ll wait until I hear several of the Republicans present refute the statement.

Saying that, he’s not a forgiving character so I imagine he’ll take it personally were a Republican to confirm the statement. And probably sack them if it was in his power to do so (I can’t remember if some of those present were staff or elected)
