The ration is 7 to 1, so, no.

Also I seem to recall there was a US presidential candidate who ran at one point from within prison (found it: Eugene V. Debs ran for the 5th time in 1920 from a prison cell for participation in a workers' strike and got 3% of the vote down from his 1912 run of 6%).

I guess you could pass a law though and call it the "We Don't Want Any Nelson Mandelas In Our Country Act: Once we've put you in prison for being against our established social order, you can't ever get into office to change it".

Great idea! Why would anyone, sane of course, want vicious Marxist terrorist in office???

Well 3 of those are misdemeanors - but I would not want a convicted criminal in congress, as much as I think most of the people in congress are criminals. I would think a felony would preclude a person from running for office. Especially a felony conviction that directly is related to that government. Manning will never be able to have any sort of Classified clearance which I would think would be a hindrance to a Senator.

But doing my own research apparently it is up to each state as to whether a felon can run for office or not. In most states a convicted felon can't own a gun or even vote. Apparently in Maryland they can not only vote but run for office.

Chelsea Manning tweeted a suicide note and a picture of herself standing on the edge of a tall building on Sunday night.
Manning, a Democratic Senatorial candidate, posted what appeared to be a suicide note on Twitter around 8:30 PM on Sunday.

Chelsea tweeted, “I’m sorry – I tried – I’m sorry I let you all down – I’m not really cut out for this world – I tried adapting to this world out here but I failed you – I couldn’t do this anymore – I can take people I don’t know hating me but not my own friends – I tried and I’m sorry about my failure”

The suicide rate among people who have had surgery to change their physical sex is sky high.

It couldn't be that they find out they're not any happier after the surgery than before, and they've mutilated themselves for nothing.

I think it's probably more that you have to be messed up in the first place to want to do it, so there's a self selection bias.

Yeah! And if people really cared about GLXBKSPBU folk, they would try to help them understand this is not a good thing, instead of enabling them.

That is generally what transgender people say, yes (and it's how I read Chelsea Manning's tweet). I find the unwillingness among conservatives to actually listen to what transgender people say to be somewhat curious, and the enthusiasm with which conservatives declare themselves sudden expert in psychology and at psychoanalyzing others, fascinating.

How many LGBT people does it take to say "I'm feeling suicidal because people are being nasty to me" before it sinks in to people like you that, yes, maybe the nastiness does play a major role?
