  • The Hypocrisy of Chuck Schumer

The Dems show their hypocrisy again this weekend by shutting down the government over immigration. see this ABC news video from 4 years ago where Chuck Schumer is blaming the Republicans for the 2013 shutdown. the hypocrisy starts at 2:49

He has now shut down the government because of Immigration when he said he would never do it in this video. he is now the one holding America our military and children hostage for 100,000 peopel here illegally which has nothing to do with the Budget, even though they have till March to fix DACA. #schumershutdown. #stopholdingamericahostage.

Sad but often true. I do think the democrats are worse than the republicans.

        Well that surprises me.

Trump has failed. This is the first time a government shutdown has happened while one party controls both Congress and the White House.

Yup Republicans could end the shutdown within 1 hour with zero assistance from Dems or independents simply by having all Republicans vote for it, then voting to override the filibuster and then having Trump sign it. This is 100% on them.

The reason for the shutdown last night was that the senate has a thing called a 'filibuster', where the senate rules allow either party to simply state that they require 60 votes rather than just a normal majority (>=50 votes + VP for tie-breaks) for a given piece of legislation to pass. Under Obama, the Republicans made it their normal practice to filibuster everything (unprecedented in US history). Last night, the Democrats stated they wanted to use the filibuster, meaning 60 votes were need, and the final vote was 50-49 (Sen McCain is sick), meaning the budget reached the majority margin, and so would have passed, if not for the 60-votes-needed requirement.

But the senate rules can be changed at any time by majority vote. The Senate has traditionally been reluctant to do so, because 'tradition', but they can. Eventually Harry Reid got so sick of Republicans filibustering everything that he 'nuked' the filibuster for presidential nominees to non-lifetime positions: A majority of senators voted to change the senate rules so that when the Senate reviews a presidential appointment to a non-lifetime position, only a majority vote is required and a filibuster cannot be requested. Then, last year, McConnell wanted to get the stolen Supreme Court seat filled with a Republican nominee, and obviously the Democrats were filibustering, so he simply got a majority vote to change the rules so they couldn't filibuster presidential appointments to lifetime positions and thus got Neil Gorsuch on the court.

Now the Democrats are filibustering the budget legislation. McConnell could remove their ability to do that by 'nuking the filibuster entirely', by getting a majority of senators to simply vote to change the rules to say the filibuster is never allowed to be used for any legislation or that it's not allowed to be used on budget legislation. So Mitch McConnell and his Republican senators have it within their power to end the shutdown if they wish.

House GOP Has Message for Senate on Shutdown: Nuke the Filibuster:

House Republicans say... they’ve got an idea for ending the crisis: Throw away the filibuster.

The legislative tool of the minority is one of the few remaining things that distinguish the Senate from the House. House Republicans are putting pressure on their Senate GOP colleagues to pursue the so-called nuclear option — change chamber rules and end the legislative filibuster, at least on spending bills.

“If a majority is good enough in the House and a majority would have kept government from shutting down, I think that’s a whole case the American public would say, ‘That’s a responsible way to govern,’” House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Roll Call.

Asked if he thinks Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would consider ending the legislative filibuster — coming on the heels of recent rules changes to lower the threshold to advance executive and judicial nominees by a majority only — McCarthy said, “That’s a question for Mitch.”...

“But I can say that if we hadn’t had the filibuster rules in place, we wouldn’t have had a government shutdown because we had 50 yeas last night,” the North Carolina Republican said, referring to the Senate’s Friday night vote, 50-49, rejecting a motion to cut off debate on the House-passed four-week continuing resolution....

Changing the filibuster rules is pretty much the only escape hatch Republicans have for ending the shutdown without striking a deal with Democrats.

There are really two ways that you can end this shutdown very, very quickly,” Freedom Caucus member Andy Biggs said. “Number one, the Democrats come to their senses. Number two, the Senate just says, ‘We’re going to change the rules, and we’re going to make the rules constitutional so that every American gets the representation of their senator that they thought they were getting.’ That is to say, each senator’s vote has the same value, as opposed to this rule, which dilutes the value of some votes.”

In short, Mitch McConnell could end the shutdown at any time if he wished (assuming he could get his own Republican Senators to comply with the rule change and to vote for the GOP budget), he does not need any assistance whatsoever from Democrats.

The whole shutdown is theater from Mitch McConnell. We saw this in a particularly egregious way last night:
CSpan: Senator McConnell Objects to Military Pay Protection.
              The discussion basically went:
McConnell: The democrats caused the shutdown! Now the military won't be paid! The democrats don't support our troops!
Dem Sen McCaskill: I propose pay protection for the military during the shutdown.
              McConnell: I object.

McConnell is the scummiest scumbag out there, in the politics of a nation full of scumbags in power he still wins for the most scummy.

                      In related crazy moron news:
White House targets filibuster, calls for 'nuclear option' as shutdown enters day 2:

The White House on Sunday called for Senate Republicans to change the chamber's rules to resolve the funding impasse as the government shutdown continued into its second day.

President Donald Trump tweeted his call for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to invoke the so-called nuclear option and thereby remove leverage for Senate Democrats...

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said on CNN's "State of the Union" that eliminating the filibuster would be one avenue they back to ending the shutdown.

Senate rules impose a threshold of 60 votes to break a filibuster, and Senate Republicans currently hold a slim majority of 51 votes, meaning even if they can unite their members, they need nine more votes to end debate. The White House is calling for the Senate to change its rules and move the threshold to a simple majority of 51 votes.

Senate majority doesn't mean anything at all if the minority party (in this case the Democrats) decides to filibuster, which is what the Democrats are doing. You need 60 votes to stop a filibuster, so having a simple majority doesn't let you pass anything if the minority party is filibustering.

The SCOTUS has nothing to do with this.

The problem is that the Republicans are very independent. Almost impossible to get them to march in lock step like the Democrats. As a result they are ineffective at stopping the shut down.
