I was somewhat amused when this showed up in my news feed. Generally, I think of Kobach as yet another in a long line seeking to restrict access to voting as a way of dealing with the simple reality that registered Republicans (nationwide) represent 24% of the electorate, while Democrats represent 31%. (http://www.people-press.org/2016/09/...ers-1992-2016/).

In this case, I agree with him. Congressional districts should be based on registered, legal voters. They should not be based on simple population numbers.

I don't know if this is a real story or not but sheesh Carpe...

    1. You have been going around mocking MM about using biased news sources, basically conservative rags like Breitbart, yet here you are quoting from an article by a very biased liberal rag.
    2. It is literally called "Talking Points Memo" - something we routinely tease JimL about "Well it is apparent JimL has been getting his views from the liberal talking points" - so welcome to the club.

As I said, Sparko, I was amused when it showed up. Brietbart also shows up in that feed. I have never been to this site before, and was only there this time because the headline caught my eye. My sole comment about the article was that I actually agreed with the position being attributed to Kobach, so I am not sure what the objection is? I have said nothing in defense of the site or even the accuracy of the article.

I also do not remember "mocking" anyone. I have expressed a dislike for Brietbart and explained why. MM uses it and defends it. I have noted that tells me a good deal about how he obtains and processes information. If you read "mocking" into my posts, I can assure you I did not put it there.

It's "liberal talking points for dummies", to be more precise.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Why do you have liberal rags in your news feed?

My news feed is Google. If I only click on liberal sources, Google adjusts and gives me only liberal stories. If I only click on conservative ones, it does the reverse. Ergo, I make it a point to regularly look at stories across the political spectrum so Google does not develop a "preference." I can tell when I am sliding left or right in my reading habits by what Google puts in my feed. It's a reasonable way to keep my reading balanced. As I noted, Brietbart also appears.

No - that is a sure-fire way to develop a "bubble."

TPM is a pretty factual news site, unlike Breitbart. They favor reporting stories that are good for the left, but their reporting of them is solid and accurate.

Mediabiasfactcheck.com rates Breitbart's level of factual accuracy as "mixed" and rates them at "extreme" end of the right-wing spectrum. Whereas they rate TPM's factual accuracy as "high" and rate them as being about in the center of the left-wing spectrum. So on both accuracy and bias, TPM is superior to Breitbart.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

Although it is an interesting question, it gets us into a form of infinite recursion.

                            etc...

So what I do is look for consistency. When someone gives me a new rating site, I look to see what their published methodology is. Then I look to see how their results align with other rating sites. If their methodology seems sound, and their results are close to other such sites, I trust them more. If they are way off, I trust them less. I especially look for whether crowd sourcing has any impact on their ratings. I think it should, but balanced with other more "objective" metrics (if anything in this process can be said to be objective).

There is a degree of trust implied here. I tend to think that these sites will follow a classic bell distribution, so the bulk of them that agree with one another are more likely to be actually balanced, and the outliers are most likely to be skewed left or right. I realize that is an assumption, but at some point you sort of have to fall back on trust that MOST people are not out to screw others and are actually interested in being truthful.

                            Color me optimistic....

In this case, I found a lot of correlation between https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ and https://www.allsides.com/ as well as several other media ranking reports.
