  • Don't worry, guys, they weren't spies, they were "benign informants". Nothing to see here. Just a perfectly normal counterintelligence operation carried out against an opposing campaign. Happen all the time. No, really.

The attempt to twist planting a spy in a campaign into an "informer" or (as per the New York Times) an investigator, reminds me of the movies where the mobster says something like "blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer to call it ..."

          • Or maybe the Democrats are saying that they would be totally fine with President Trump unleashing an army of "benign informants" on his opponents in 2020. What's the big deal? Happens all the time. Nothing to see here.

Well, ironically, the same guy was implanted into the Carter campaign in the 1980 election by Reagan and Bush to spy on Carter and pass information back to the Reagan campaign. That was clearly 100% criminal.

However, this time around, this guys actions don't look criminal at all: The FBI had received a report of problems so they tasked people with investigating it, including using someone undercover. Investigating alleged criminal activities is what the FBI is supposed to do.

I also can't help but note that criminal Republican administrations in the US seem to have a history of foul play against their electoral opponents - Nixon spied on the Democratic headquarters (Watergate building) not to mention getting the Vietnamese government to lie on his behalf and claim he had a secret solution to the Vietnam war, Reagan implanted a man into Carter's campaign, Bush W's team stopped Florida recounting their votes with the judge appointed by Bush Snr being the swing vote on the SCOTUS at the time, the Trump team admits to meeting with Russians about getting dirt on Hillary. Whereas the Democrats record is squeaky clean on the same subject. When Al Gore's team in 2000 were mailed a video of Bush training for the debates by a disgruntled Bush aide, rather than learn from it to figure out debate tactics, they immediately called the FBI and reported it.

The difference in criminality between Republican and Democratic administrations is stark if you look at indictments per president:

Trump, so far, is at about an average level of Republican criminality given the number of people Mueller's indicted in Trump's first year in office.

              • The quality of the conspiracy theories posted in this thread has declined, markedly.

It should be noted that no news from the Mueller investigation means that ... there's no news. It doesn't mean nothing's been found, and it doesn't mean findings are being concealed. The investigation will proceed at its own pace, and while interviews are still forthcoming, there's every reason for Mueller's team to keep whatever they know to themselves.

On the other hand, when do innocent folks attack the prosecutor?

No, it means what he said it means, the FBI had an informant investing Russian involvement in the campaign. I.e. it was doing its job.

When the prosecutor is dirty, and the falsely accused have a legitimate reason to call him out for his corruption.

I think even you can understand there is a profound difference between a campaign sending someone to spy on their opponent's campaign is a whole lot different than the government sending someone to spy on a campaign

And isn't it strange that with all these concerns about Russians corrupting the election that the FBI didn't think it worth informing Trump about the dangers (after all, they were spying on him for his own good, according to Brennan), or planting moles inside Hillary's campaign, or insisting that they be allowed to analyze the "hacked" DNC server for themselves? It's almost like they really weren't concerned about Russian interference at all.
