In any country the majority race tends to have various advantages over the minority races. That's just factual, not "far-left", and denying the facts just makes you a crazy person rather than far-right necessarily.

Of course what one thinks we should do about it affects ones political leanings. A far right person might say "inequality is natural, we are superior, oppress the minority", while a left leaning person might want political policies to help those who are worse off.

But if you refuse to even acknowledge the inequality exists you're living in lala land.

Yes, when it's a valuable conversation. Alas, you haven't provided a valuable conversation for months. You just troll people about their country which you claim to know better than they do, Kiwi. And then you wind if someone nails you for your asinine half-cocked insanity. What can I say, train wrecks like you make it fascinating when you crash and burn. There's a reason I stopped defending you to my fellows months ago. I'm just as sick of your vitriol.

        • I see that balisongs and most neck knives/boot knives are banned in new Zealand. Balisongs in particular strike me as odd to ban considering that functionally they are not different from most ordinary pocket knives.

I look forward to seeing that from you someday. Sadly I've never seen you make a positive contribution so far, only trolling.

A lot of Americans I talk to on this forum seem to have this very strange idea that knowledge comes by osmosis and that by proximity to the locations under discussion that they should somehow know more about the topics than someone who's looked it up. While it's obviously possible for me to be missing some crucial background knowledge that they happen to have (as occasionally happens when they try and make a comment about NZ to get back at me in their anger), in my discussions with them that consistently turns out not to be the case. Rather they just get angry at a foreigner knowing more about some parts of their country (specific laws, specific political processes) than they happen to. I'm not sure whether it's a case of patriotism (foreigners aren't allowed to know more than locals), or embarrassment and anger at their own ignorance.

I find it a bit of a strange response really, as I've never had that reaction on other forums or when talking to people from other countries. I've watched a lot of US news and political commentary from multiple US commentators for years, so it's not like I'm uninformed about the facts of the situations or don't understand what the main points each side makes in political discussions are.

As far as international politics goes, the US is particularly fascinating to watch and talk about because they are such a large outlier within the OECD countries on so many issues. Guns being one of those. I find it astonishing how many people on the right-wing in the US have such reluctance to look at how other countries in the OECD have dealt successfully with the various issues that the US is having problems with. It is not as if solutions don't exist, or as if there aren't other countries in the world that have had the same kinds of issues.

There's a reason I stopped defending you to my fellows months ago.
I'd prefer not to be defended by a person like you, thanks.

            • Broward Deputies to Carry Rifles on School Grounds: Sheriff

Deputies will carry rifles on the grounds of local schools in Broward County in the wake of the Parkland school shooting, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel announced Wednesday.

Israel said that only deputies who are "qualified and trained" will carry the rifles on school grounds.

"When they are not carrying the rifle, until we look for gun locks and gun lockers, the only place when they're not slinging the rifle, that will be allowed to be stored, will be in their locked police vehicle," said Israel.

The practice was implemented Wednesday morning, Israel said at a news conference.

Googling balisongs (I had no idea what they were) takes me to this wiki page which tells me they're a knife carried for self-defense in the Philippines which can be brought out fast, and they're banned in most countries under standard concealed weapon laws.

I imagine their purpose of "self-defense" would get them banned here, over and above the standard problems with concealed weapons. A few years back when my flatmate was applying for a gun license for hunting, the process made very clear that "I want a gun for self-defense" was not considered a valid/rational/legal reason for a gun license (stats from the US routinely show that guns are more likely to end up harming their owners than they are criminals - either through use in suicide or through the criminal getting hold of the weapon and using it against the owner), and you had to actually be an active hunter and demonstrate active membership of a hunting group to get a gun license. Obviously it makes the streets here a lot safer to walk down when nobody has the type of flick-knife that can be pulled out and stuck into someone or a gun they can pull out and shoot someone with.

Generally if someone has a pocket knife here, it's the dozen-function swiss-army knife style, where getting one particular blade out requires carefully finding the right one and prying it out with your fingernail over the course of 10 seconds, and then the blade will be 1 inch long and usually pretty blunt (my current flatmate has one and I've tried to use it to cut something and gave up and opted for my kitchen meat cleaver instead). It's totally possible to buy much better knives if you need a good one for cutting up an animal carcass or something while hunting, but they cost a fair amount of money and only hunters would buy them.

In non-western countries, yes. But western countries are ruled by self loathing white liberals that actively make things harder for other white people (other than themselves).

In western countries governments actively discriminate against white people (and overperforming minorities) and deify minorities that engage in brutal crimes, underperform, refuse/don't have the skills to work, etc. This is a well documented fact. What little discrimination goes the other way is usually done by private citizens and usually against the law. The criticism of said minorities is liable to get you thrown in jail or fined. White privilege doesn't refer to the natural advantage of being a majority (white people don't even need to be singled out for that), it's scapegoating and psychological bullying. Like the way the Nazis talked about Jews.

I thought some more about this while dealing with a 28 year old man who can't seem to get his life together, and has managed to violate the terms of his probation, and sat there crying like a baby when he was told he's about a hair's breadth away from revocation.

It reminded me of my cop days, and the number of times I arrested an 18 or 19 year old thug for armed robbery or rape, had to physically fight with them, once getting stabbed requiring 16 stitches in my leg near my groin..... and these gangsta thugs would show up in court all cleaned up, gentleman's haircut, suit and tie, and acting as polite as could be while their public defender portrayed them as "just a child, a victim of the system...." crap.

I guess. I've always thought a light chair or a baseball bat would be the most easily accessible weapons in general here. Although I guess I'm well above average in height and proportionally arm length so I guess swinging those would work better for me than most.

Ok. I use knives in my kitchen everyday. But I guess if you lived here the laws might interfere with the variety of knives you were able to collect. There are plenty of hobbies in the world though. I used to collect collectable trading cards (Magic the Gathering mostly).

In case you're curious here are the actual prohibitions in New Zealand

                              Prohibited offensive weapons
Restricted offensive weapons other than firearms

These are offensive weapons you are not allowed to bring into New Zealand:
                              • Bayonets
                              • Knuckledusters, knives incorporating knuckledusters, swordsticks (including, without limitation, any identifiable components of swordsticks), and any weapon disguised to give the appearance of another article*.
                              • Any knife having a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife (sometimes known as a flick knife or flick gun).
                              • Any knife having a blade that is released from the handle or sheath by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force, and that, when released, is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other device (sometimes known as a gravity knife or butterfly knife).
                              • Any knife, with the exception of a folding pocket knife with a blade less than 10 cm in length, that —
                                • is designed for ease of concealment on the person; or
                                • has a double-edged blade that is designed or suitable for stabbing or throwing (as opposed to cutting); or
                                • is a knife of any of the kinds sometimes known as a fist knife, gimlet knife, punch dagger, push dagger, push dirk, push knife, T-handled knife, or throwing knife.

                              * Note: This includes firearms disguised as other articles, such as walking stick shotguns.

If you want to bring any of these weapons into New Zealand, before you leave your home country apply to New Zealand Police.

Doing some quick googling, though, it does looks like there are plenty of actual knife and sword collectors in New Zealand, so it's not like it's unheard of there.

The more likely answer is the kid simply didn’t want to carry out his attack and found an excuse not to and people are latching onto this story without engaging their brain. I know that around here there’s dozens of kids outside the school after school and a fast moving vehicle could do a huge amount of damage in a blink of an eye. It already happened in Europe, several times over.
