Every few years, surveys of historians and scholarly experts on the history of the presidency are done. These can provide a useful guide for laypeople to help give a bit of historical context to the presidencies of our own lifetimes.
The latest poll was of the 170 members of the American Political Science Association’s (APSA) "Presidents and Executive Politics" section.
In this survey, Obama has reached the top-10, and is in 8th place, one place ahead of Ronald Amnesty-For-Immigrants Reagan.
Trump is ranked dead last, even lower than James Buchanan - who's failures in office regarding the slavery issue are widely regarded as being a major factor in leading to the Civil War. The Republican scholars in the survey differed on this issue, however, as they only ranked Trump 5th from last rather than in last place.
