    "How are you doing?"

I hate this phrase. As I see it, there are two options for response:

    1. Be honest
    2. Be dishonest

Nobody wants you to go the honest route--and admit it, you don't want anyone else to go the honest route when you ask them this, either.

    "How are you doing today?"

"Oh man, I'm having a rough day today. Let me tell you about..."

"Whoa dude, I just asked how you were doing. No need to get all serious and stuff."

So instead we go the dishonest route:

    "How are you doing today?"

    "Oh, I'm great!"

I've experimented with an honest, yet still optimistic response: "I'm doing ok." But then people will say something like, "Just ok?" and the cycle begins anew.

    More research is necessary.

I would be tempted to answer "How am I doing what?"

I usually just say "hey what's up." Or if I have knowledge of something being wrong, I will ask about how they are doing. If they ask me that question, I just say fine - not get out of my face!
God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants his footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm. You fearful saints fresh courage take, The clouds you so much dread are great with mercy, and shall break In blessings on your head. Judge not the Lord by your feeble sense, But trust him for his grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face. William Cowper

I usually answer, "I wish it were Friday!" and they go "Don't we all!" and then we have a chuckle and go about our day like ships passing in the fog.

Except on Fridays. Then I say, "I am glad it is Friday!" and they say, "You and me both!" and then we chuckle and go about our day like ships passing in the fog. But a brighter and more friendly fog that will lift at the end of the work day.

That's why, in Texas, we just say "howdy". Even though it's supposedly a contraction for "how do you do", it's understood that we really don't give a flyin' flip about getting an answer.

    Howdy!

1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

When somebody asks me how I'm doing, I usually respond "I'm doing so good it hurts!" They usually just say "ouch", and walk away in wonder.

Somebody tell Sparko he's on my ignore list, just in case he tries to post to me.

If I'm not doing well, I usually say "tired" or maybe "hungry" because one of those things is usually true along with whatever other stuff is going on in my life.
