Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

  • John 12:1-2, 12.

John 12:1-2 . . . Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; . . .

    v.12 . . . On the next day . .

Six days before the Passover when a supper was prepared was not a Sabbath day. So that next day was not the first day of the week [a Sunday].

Jesus' entry into Jerusalem was not on a Sunday.

6th day before the 14th of Nisan.

    8th of Nisan
9th of Nisan. Not a Sunday.
    10th of Nisan
    11th of Nisan
    12th of Nisan
13th of Nisan being the 1st day before.

. . . the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; . . . -- Romans 1:16 KJV

. . . that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: . . . -- 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: . . . -- 1 John 5:1 KJV

Might the difference between the Jewish and Roman reckoning of when the day began and ended be relevant ? If Sunday does not begin until the midnight between Saturday and Sunday (the Roman reckoning) it would end after several hours after sunset, at midnight between Sunday and Monday - but the Jewish day was reckoned from sunset to sunset. They overlap slightly.

So several hours would fall on what would count as two different days, according as one reckoned by one or other system.
And it can’t be taken for granted that all the Evangelists used the same reckoning.

1Cor 15:34 Come to your senses as you ought and stop sinning; for I say to your shame, there are some who know not God.

but that won't prevent others from
taking it upon themselves to deprive you
of the right to call yourself Christian.

John does use Roman hours in his account. Which you did not make mention. The text still says the "next day," v.12. Which still does not allow the previous day to have been a Sabbath.
