A Rocklin High School teacher is on paid administrative leave over her views about the national school walk out. The teacher says all she did was open up a debate about the politics of the protest in her classroom.

Mrs. Benzel teaches history at Rocklin High School.

She says it was only appropriate to talk to her class about the politics of organized protests, ahead of the school walkout.

But she says the school disagreed with her views and told her to stay home Wednesday morning.

“We had a dialogue in class about it in Thursday and Friday. And today I received the call. So I am aghast,” said Julianne Benzel.

Benzel says she never discouraged her students from participating in the national school walk out, but she did question whether it’s appropriate for a school to support a protest against gun violence if they’re not willing to support all protests.

The last sentence is one of the things I'm concerned about. I don't think I'm too far off asserting that most school districts will only allow their students to protest for politically correct or liberal causes. Imagine, for instance, the reaction if an illegal alien killed someone that lived near a school in a "sanctuary city" and the students wanted to protest. Can you even envision a school permitting that?
yeah that is a good point. If it is a true "walk-out" led by students, then the school should oppose it as a rule. After all they are walking-out of the school where they are supposed to be, so that pretty much is a protest against the school too right? You don't do a walk-out on something you agree with. And if it is a school-supported protest, then they need to allow all protests, or they are interfering with the first amendment.

Or what about protesting in favor of allowing teachers to arm themselves.

My (mostly black) high school had a walk-out when, during an anti-raycissm indoctrination assembly (they brought 3 minorities to whine about all the racial discrimination they experienced, 1 black guy and 2 mystery meats, one of which was a lady that looked 100% white and who was trying to play Shaun King before Shaun King became Shaun King) a black kid complained that one of the teachers called him the diminutive equivalent of the n word. It was quite amusing because the school staff pushed liberal poz hard and they suddenly found themselves playing the role of the bad guys being protested by the monsters they created.

This doesn't appear to be a hypothetical. A student was threatened with arrest and escorted off school property during the walkout for holding a sign reading, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

People usually kill people using some kind of weapon. Using a gun for killing other people is very effective. But of course that is a "deatail" some people find it convenient to ignore. That of course does nothing to change the fact that the student is allowed to hold his view just as well as I am allowed to find it a simplification.

That is quite a lot of speculation and nothing to back it up apart from the fact that quite many readers may find it convenient to think that this is the truth. Have you got any facts or do you expect us to just buy into this pure speculation?

I agree. Our district believes that it's a teachable moment but that if it's important enough for you, it's important enough for at least two or three detentions.
I'm following your comments with interest, but I don't have much experience with high school students. We do have a dual-enrollment high school on campus, but it's less than 100 kids total. I like 'em, but I rarely see them in my classes anymore because they have their own instructors. I recruited one of them for my peer tutor program last semester.

When I did have a couple of dual-enrollment students from an offsite high school in one of my classes, I was instructed to treat them like any of my other students. If they're on campus, in my class, then they're "officially" adults, and not even their parents can ask me for any details on their attendance.

I'm not sure what detentions are, but I'm pretty sure I'll never have to give them.

Why does Fake News care about protests by silly kids? Sad!

That's barely a fire drill! They should protest that they need more time to protest.
