      The Ark

From what I understand, the Ark has been missing for quite some time and no one knows what happened to it.

Is this correct or are there any promising theories as to what became of the Ark?

Incidentally, I seem to recall that something bad would happen if you viewed the Ark-is this true, or am I just mixing Hollywood in with Old biblical narrative?

D'oh! You know what, I had a totally one track mind on this, I didn't even think about Noah's Ark. I meant the Ark of the Covenant.

Methinks someone's been watching a little too much "Raiders of the Lost Ark!"
If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. And when you’re mean, it’s hard for people to listen to, much less desire, your truth.

The ark was most likely destroyed when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple in 586 B.C.

I think so too. It's in line with one of the links I provided:

The Ark of the Covenant—could it even be found?

The Wyatt/Gray ‘track record’ of false claims on other subjects (see main text) makes it easy to dismiss these current claimants to finding the Ark of the Covenant, along with all their ‘reasons’ as to why no one is conveniently allowed to access any hard evidence.

The Ark was probably lost or destroyed when the Babylonians sacked Jerusalem in 587 BC and destroyed the temple. If Jews had hidden it, the Ark would surely have been used in the Second Temple, which Josephus says it wasn’t (Jewish Wars 5:219).

An additional reason for skepticism, which would apply to any future such claims by others, relates to God’s dealings in fulfilling the Old Covenant system via the New Covenant in Christ. God forcefully demonstrated this with the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in AD 70, predicted by Christ four decades earlier (Matthew 24). There were to be no more animal sacrifices once His designated ‘Passover Lamb,’ the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:29, Rev. 13:8), had been slain ‘once for all’ (Hebrews 10:10).

Jeremiah 3:16 strongly suggests that there is to be no reappearance of the Ark of the Covenant, either: ‘And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.’

There does happen to be an ancient church in Ethiopia with a guarded building where they claim the ark has been kept all these years.

If I had to put odds on this, I'd say there's about a 1% (or less) chance it has any material connection to the ark mentioned in the bible; about 49% chance it's an ancient replica; and about 50% it's something else altogether (e.g. nothing, some other venerated artifact or body part).

But I hope we never know for sure. Some secrets are more fun when kept...

You can build a prototype by the book, but a legend you build by the seat of your pants.

Yeh, it looks like it will be kept for quite a while, they're very firm about not letting anybody in the building.

      Re: The Ark

Nebuchadnezzar had to know about Jericho, the Philistines' sorrows for taking the Ark. He wouldn't have destroyed it, he wouldn't have listed it on items taken, he wouldn't have left it there, he was a megalomaniac. He would have believed he could harness its power and would have taken it back to Babylon. His sorrows were his insanity for over three years during which time he probably stopped visiting the Ark and thus regained his sanity. Could these sorrows have continued even to Sadam? There's a good chance that the reason for Nebuchadnezzar's invasion was the ark to obtain its power. I would say it is in or near the ancient ruins of Babylon close enough for Nebuchadnezzar to visit. I'm considering going to the Middle East this summer and may try to get to the area.

There's nothing in the Bible about that. Lots of people viewed the ark in the Bible. God did give the Philistines bubonic plague for capturing the Ark in battle, though. Read 1 Samuel 4-6.
