Michael Cohen is on the hot seat likely for legal issues concerning how the money was handled, and possibly how the contracts were handled.

FBI raids Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's office

Washington (CNN)The FBI raided the office of Michael Cohen, a personal lawyer and confidant of President Donald Trump, Cohen's attorney confirmed to CNN Monday.

One source familiar with the matter told CNN that included in the documents authorities seized was information related to Stephanie Clifford, better known as porn actress Stormy Daniels, who alleges she had an affair with Trump in 2006 that the White House has denied. A source familiar with the matter said the search warrant was very broad in terms of items sought, and another source said the search included bank records.

Stephen Ryan, a lawyer for Cohen, said in a statement that the US Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York had executed "a series of search warrants" including at his office, and "seized the privileged communications" between Cohen and his clients.

Trump slammed the move Monday as a "disgraceful situation" and "an attack on our country." A White House official said Trump had been watching TV reports, and that the President knew about the raid before the news broke.

The Monday raids included the Loew's Regency hotel where Cohen has been staying, according to a source familiar with the matter. There were approximately a dozen FBI agents involved, the source said.

Additionally, The Wall Street Journal reported the raid included Cohen's home.

Ryan's statement called the search "completely inappropriate and unnecessary," and said federal prosecutors had told him it stemmed partially from a referral by the office of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Apparently Mueller found incriminating evidence outside his jurisdiction, and turned that evidence over to the appropriate Attorney General and the FBI.

I love this comment on it:

A Trump appointed Republican (Rosenstein) approved a request from a Republican (Mueller), who pulled this off by coordinating with a Trump appointed Republican prosecutor for the Southern District of New York.

Or as Trump calls it, a Democrat witch hunt.

Yep! Trump sure does a good job of doing just that, but this is a a very standard case within the legal system of actually those appointed by Trump.

Probably a bit inaccurate. Meuller likely did not pull anything off. He simply followed the legal requirements of his job when he found evidence of crime that was not in the jurisdiction of his investigation. He turned the evidence over to the FBI and the Attorney General who acquired the justification of a search through a Federal Judge as a very normal accepted process within our legal system.

What is being celebrated is that the legal system still works efficiently.

The right-wing belief that criminals should be punished seems to go out the nearest window when it's their guy who's the criminal.

Hillary gets chants of "Lock her up!" whereas with Trump it's "the deep state's out to get him". A bit of consistency would be nice.

I hate Hillary and Trump. But at least Hillary was smart enough and had good enough lawyers to keep herself close enough to legality that nobody could prove anything significant against her in about 30 years of Republicans trying pretty hard. Trump's defense seems to be a comedy of errors by comparison and he seems to have been caught pretty Red handed (). It's been a safe bet that Trump's dealings wouldn't stand up to much scrutiny ever since he refused to release his tax return.

LOL. The basic assumption seems to be that Trump is never wrong, it's always "them others".

Just another desperate ploy by Mueller. He could have quietly subpeoned the information, but a dirty cop always makes a show of gathering "evidence". He's not even pretending to investigate Russian collusion any more. This stunt is about the Stormy Daniels nothing burger. Trump is right to call out Mueller for his disgraceful conduct.

No Mueller could not simply subpoena the information, because the discovery of the evidence was outside the limits of his investigation, He was obligated to turn over the evidence to the Attorney General and the FBI, and they would make the decisions as to what legal actions will follow, and that is exactly what happened. What Mueller did was simple the responsibility of every citizen of the USA.

Trump has other problems, like $150,000 payment in Russia by a Russian oligarch for a 20 minute speech during his election campaign.

Yeah right, a deep state ploy conducted by a Trump appointed(in January)republican U.S. atty for the southern district of NY. You people are proving the tin foil hat analogy accurate. And btw MM, Muellars investigation was never limited to collusion.
