All those cities in red states Star - are they run by Democrats or Republicans?

Probably close to all major cities in the US have liberal city councils and mayors, however they don't set the laws that matter, the state and federal governments do.

No Star, it is up to the Mayor and city councils to direct the police force. In San Francisco they basically gave up policing the homeless population and the OP shows where we are today.

If you wanted to know that, you could look at the world's most liberal/progressive countries such as Scandinavia, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Canada. Those turn out to be all in the top-10 happiest countries in the world. What a surprise, it turns out that progressive evidence-based policies work.

I would have thought that in general the state laws would tend to have more impact than the city council per se. I would think that pretty close to all dense urban areas in the US have Dem mayors as urban voters tend democratic, so liberals would run both the best and worst cities and all the ones in between. More interesting would be to see how bad cities in red states versus blue states are.

States very rarely step in or interfere except in cases of graft and corruption.

Googling for a top 10 list of US cities by violent crime gives me:
1. Detroit, Michigan (Redish leaning state)
2. St Louis, Missouri (Red)
3. Oakland, California (Blue)
4. Memphis, Tennessee (Red)
5. Birmingham, Alabama (Red)
6. Atlanta, Georgia (Red)
7. Baltimore, Maryland (Blue leaning)
8. Stockton, California (Blue)
9. Cleveland, Ohio (Red leaning)
10. Buffalo, New York (Blue)

So that's Red 6, Blue 4, which isn't a statistically significant difference. So your suggestion that all the worst cities are that way due to liberal policies, doesn't appear to stand up to this cursory sanity-check.

Then again, how many large cities are there that are controlled by conservatives? IOW, both the best run and worse run large cities in the U.S. are run by the left because all the large cities are run by them.

In some cases they are like blue dots in a sea of red, and those dots are decidedly Democrat controlled.

And describing Michigan as a "Redish leaning state" is silly. Trump's victory is the first time the state voted Republican in nearly three decades, and Hillary probably would have won it this go-around if she had heeded the warnings and didn't take it for granted (again, indicating how blue the state is regarded).
