Yup. Looks like he trolled them big time.

If we are talking about reparations paid by the government, then we are talking about things the government did wrong. So long as the government made slavery illegal and made a reasonable good-faith effort to enforce that law, then it's in the clear and did nothing wrong on the subject. If it made slavery legal, or if it knew that institutionalized illegal slavery existed and deliberately turned a blind eye to it, then it did wrong and potentially owes reparations.

My own, relatively strongly held view, is that reparations are only relevant when the person who was wronged is alive to receive them. If the person who was wronged is dead, you can't undo the harm done to them, or reverse historical guilt, by doing something nice for their distant descendants. I have absolutely no time for or interest in any modern white liberals who feel a sense of guilt about what happened to historical people and who think they can assuage their own sense of guilt and make themselves feel better by randomly giving large sums of money to some distant descendants of those wronged people in the present. But I think if a person who has been wronged is still alive then you are morally obligated to act insofar as it is possible to undo the wrong and rectify the situation.

So Obama's attitude of "we don't look backwards [at when the crimes were committed, so we don't punish criminals], we only look forward", is okay when talking about slavery reparations IMO because no one alive today was directly affected by historic legal slavery in the US, but it's absolutely not okay when it comes to Wall St wrecking the housing market which caused black people in the US to disproportionately lose out (due to having a higher proportion of their wealth in housing assets than white people) and lose half their wealth. IMO Obama (and the Republican congress that stopped him from acting) we absolutely morally wrong to bail out the banks rather than the people, and absolutely morally wrong not to imprison all the criminals on Wall St.

Wait until someone calculates for you the reparations bill due to you for genocide of the natives, stealing all their land, kidnapping black people from Africa as slaves, slavery, the KKK's terrorism, Jim Crow apartheid/segregation, etc. You'll wish it only amounted to free coffee for life for all black and native american peoples.
As long as Democrats are willing to pick up the tab since they're the ones most responsible for keeping racism alive, no problem!

So they were arrested. Now everybody is calling this woman (manager) a racist, and she lost her job.
In my town, an old white woman was arrested by a jumpy police chief for inadvertently blocking an exit at a recent council meeting. This sort of thing happens all the time to all sorts of people, but we only hear about it when the perps happen to be black.

right. AND the person doing the wrong has to be the one making the reparations. I should not have to give reparations to people who I did not wrong and who themselves have suffered no wrong.

In my case, AFAICT, only my mother's grandfather's side of the family was even in the U.S. by the time of the Civil War -- and they fought on the side of the North with at least one (my great-grandfather) being seriously wounded.

A lot of blood was paid to free the slaves.

I guess you will get a prorated bill.

Meh. Just take it out of the reparations owed to me for having one of my grandparent's barn burned to the ground during WWI because he was German (and while he was in the U.S. Army fighting in France).

My grandpa was German and fought in ww2 on the Nazi side. Although he had no choice in the matter, and he was captured and spent most of the war in New Jersey in a POW camp.
