Curious wording. Makes it sound like the van acted on its own.

We're going to have to ban vans.

"Ban the Vans" - that has a nice ring to it. We should start making protest signs...

                  A terrible tragedy.

Congratulations though to the Canadian police who were able to apprehend the suspect alive - even when the suspect tried to trick them into shooting him by pretending to draw and fire a gun at police. The police showed incredible restraint and courage in the line of duty. The video footage of the Canadian police officer not shooting should be played on repeat in many US police departments.

Such policies result in the regular shooting of innocents, as police make snap judgements and shoot people dead who turn out to neither have a gun nor be guilty of any crime. Whether the person is guilty and ought to be punished is up to the courts to decide, not police.

Nonsense. The police behaved with moderation and restraint and apprehended the murderer for the courts to deal with...as it should be.

Oh stuff it, you sanctimonious jackass. Police in the US by and large would have responded the exact same way. Now if the guy had actually drawn a weapon, that would have been a different matter, but we can presume that the officer could clearly see that the suspect was bluffing.

While technically true, the police don't have to take unnecessary risks to take a dangerous criminal into custody. If they think he has a gun, and is trying to use it, they can and should use deadly force to stop him. Not only for their own protection but for the protection of anyone else in the vicinity. You make it sound like it is so easy to make these decisions. They have a split second to make them from usually dozens of feet away, and in usually poor circumstances with a lot of adrenaline flowing on both sides. It's easy to be an armchair quarterback.

They apprehended him using guns! oh the horror. Why couldn't they just ask him to give up politely without resorting to pulling guns on the poor guy?
