Deeper Waters Forum Guidelines

Notice – The ministries featured in this section of TheologyWeb are guests of this site and in some cases not bargaining for the rough and tumble world of debate forums, though sometimes they are. Additionally, this area is frequented and highlighted for guests who also very often are not acclimated to debate fora. As such, the rules of conduct here will be more strict than in the general forum. This will be something within the discretion of the Moderators and the Ministry Representative, but we simply ask that you conduct yourselves in a manner considerate of the fact that these ministries are our invited guests. You can always feel free to start a related thread in general forum without such extra restrictions. Thank you.

Deeper Waters is founded on the belief that the Christian community has long been in the shallow end of Christianity while there are treasures of the deep waiting to be discovered. Too many in the shallow end are not prepared when they go out beyond those waters and are quickly devoured by sharks. We wish to aid Christians to equip them to navigate the deeper waters of the ocean of truth and come up with treasure in the end.

We also wish to give special aid to those often neglected, that is, the disabled community. This is especially so since our founders are both on the autism spectrum and have a special desire to reach those on that spectrum. While they are a special emphasis, we seek to help others with any disability realize that God can use them and that they are as the Psalmist says, fearfully and wonderfully made.

  • My favorite arguements.

Mr peters talks a lot about Aquinas and the five ways. I don't know much about Aquinas so I use different arguments.

    A. Dostoevsky's argument for moral standards.
    1. If there is no God one can do no wrong.
    2. Things exist which are wrong like murder.
    3. Therefore God exist as the standard of morality.

    B. The Kalam cosmological argument.
    1. Everything that began to exist has a cause.
    2. The universe began to exist.
    3. The universe has a cause and that cause is God.

    C. The Statement of Paul.
If Christ is not raised our faith is in vain.

These are some. I happen to like the trillema as well.

My own view is that the definition of 'immoral' is an action taken by one person that affects another where in the mind of the person taking the action they had negative intentions toward the other person (e.g. they wished harm or ill on the other due to dislike or malice etc). In short, 'morality' is about labeling interpersonal interactions as being positive or negative in intent. So if you murder someone it's immoral because you wanted to harm them. Any action (including God's) can thus be judged for morality depending on the extent to which harms or benefits toward others were intended in the mind of the person taking the action.

    B. The Kalam cosmological argument.
    1. Everything that began to exist has a cause.
    2. The universe began to exist.
    3. The universe has a cause and that cause is God.
If time is part of the universe and began with it, then the universe's 'beginning' is quite different to the way things that begin within the universe, so the analogy in the premises seems iffy. Anyway, I don't mind saying the universe had a cause - it's probably some quantum physical mathematical theorem that's a truism we've yet to discover. Seems unlike that the mathematical theorem would be conscious. Seems particularly unlikely it would be the Christian God.

    C. The Statement of Paul.
If Christ is not raised our faith is in vain.
I'm not quite sure what the argument is here. As an atheist I would say that yes, Christ wasn't raised, and yes, your faith is in vain. How does that prove to you or I that God exists?

I happen to like the trillema as well.
My view is that a critical examination of the gospels shows Jesus saw himself as a prophet of God like the prophets of the OT. Naturally, as an atheist I think he wasn't really a prophet because I don't think God exists. So I think like the other biblical prophets he was delusional in that respect. IMO, later Christians deified him and put a small number of words in his mouth in some of the later-written parts of the gospels that suggested he was substantially more than a prophet. So overall, I'd opt for both the he-never-said-any-such-thing and he-was-a-bit-delusional options.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

My favorite argument was "but he did it first"!

      (mom never bought that, either)
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I hope you don't use this argument, because the last five words are not justified.

            That's "Nazis" with a capital N.

It sounded too harsh to start with a capital N. Try it. Say it with a capital N and then say it with a lower case n and see the difference.

You would hear the difference, not see it.

Wow! It makes Nazis seem positively cuddly when I use the lower case letter "n"

This is a definition of God and it follows that the best people to speak on the subject are Cosmologists and not, as it happens, Clergy, who we now appreciate, have been hogging the limelight for far too long.

Let us read God’s word; we begin by reading the Gospel according to Edwin Hubble.

If you say "it" with a capital N, it becomes NIT! Or, it becomes nit.
