That was Irans money to begin with, MM. The U.S. likely saved itself up to 8 billion dollars by settling the 10 billion dollar suit out of court. That's what you call a win win situation!

Since I presume you have no clue on these things, here are the facts:
1. In 1979 the US froze Iranian accounts, including $400 million that had been paid to the US for fighter jets that were never delivered. The US didn't get around to unfreezing that money and just pocketed the $400 million and walked away.
2. An Iran–United States Claims Tribunal based in the Hague was established to resolve the legal dispute over this money. The tribunal process dragged on for years and years. Iran was seeking $10 billion in compensation.
3. The rumors were that the the tribunal was finally going to make a ruling, and not in the US's favor. To preempt this, the US chose to settle the case. The settlement was to pay back the $400 million with accrued interest (totaling $1.7 billion). This potentially saved the US ~$8 billion if the tribunal had given Iran the compensation it was seeking.

As Jim says, it was pretty much a win-win situation for the US, as they avoided penalties that could have amounted to $8 billion, and finally resolving the dispute put the Iranians in a good mood and they released some US hostages.

Trump was utterly enraged, and I think his hatred of Obama and desire to destroy everything Obama achieved largely comes from that evening (and it's also why Trump refuses to attend any White House correspondents dinners now). Previously he was just a run of the mill racist, but that evening made it personal for him.

Um, the references I can see say he described the results of the intervention in Libya as a "...-show". The reference was to the mess caused by US intervention there, not a general characterization of the country as a bad country, it was also said behind closed doors rather than announced in public. Also your quote of Obama is of the wrong word.

Well Trump seems to be threatening to sanction any nations that trade with Iran. So if Europe gives Trump the middle finger, as seems quite likely at this point, and declares that Iran is upholding its end of the deal and that Europe is happy with the deal, and therefore continues to trade with Iran... is Trump then going to place trade sanctions on Europe???
