  • Bias Response Teams: The Stasi...

... is alive and well on the college campus.

The new free speech advocacy organization Speech First announced Tuesday that it is suing the University of Michigan on behalf of three students who object to the campus's broad disciplinary code and bias response team.

These campus policies imperil students' First Amendment rights and chill free expression on campus, the lawsuit contends.

"Speech codes like Michigan's flagrantly violate the First Amendment," said Speech First President Nicole Neily in a statement. "Moreover, a bias response system has no place in America, much less on a modern-day college campus. Because it's impossible to know what comments might be 'perceived' by others as offensive, students don't contribute to conversations and debates, ask questions, write papers, or invite speakers they might otherwise."

Michigan's code of conduct prohibits harassment, defining such conduct as "unwanted negative attention perceived as intimidating, demeaning, or bothersome to an individual." It's easy to see how censors could abuse this standard: It punishes speech merely perceived as bothersome to any person, no matter how unreasonable that person's perceptions are.

Bias response teams, which exist at dozens if not hundreds of campuses, are also a frequent source of free speech abuse. They generally permit students to report each other for having done or said something offensive. The team compiles lists of thoughtcrimes, and occasionally contacts the perpetrators or refer them for disciplinary action.

I think you may have a point, seer.

And in a strange twist, I don't think you have a point. The First Amendment only prohibits the government from suppressing the right to free speech. Private institutions, on the other hand, are free to do as they please in that regard. If a student feels that he can not freely express himself at a particular institution then it is his right to transfer to a different institution which he feels is more accommodating.

I think too many people misunderstand what the Bill of Rights does and doesn't protect.

I think it is ironic. For years people have been afraid of Big Brother government becoming oppressive and suppressing freedom. But no, our children are doing it to themselves. Who raised this generation of communistic morons? Wasn't me.

I still think that the best tactic is to fight fire with fire. Every time a Marxist professor starts on a rant someone needs to file a complaint saying they were offended and felt like they were in a hostile, threatening environment and demand that action be taken. If necessary take a page from the left during the 60s and hold a sit-in in the dean's office or something similar. And keep holding their feet to the fire until disciplinary action is taken or they start phasing out this nonsense.

I'm always still in trouble again

I don't think there's enough paper in the world for all the complaints.

Then swamp 'em with them. If they start receiving multiple complaints on a daily basis it makes it all the harder to sweep under the rug.

What I meant was if we were to file complaints every time a Marxist professor went on a rant, we'd spend all our time complaining.

Most universities today do accept some form of federal or state money.

U of M is a private institution? I doubt it in the extreme. Faw universities are private - and the instant they take public funding, they are no longer 'private' in the sense you're using it here.
