FBI warns Russians hacked hundreds of thousands of routers

    reminded me....

A lot of home routers for your internet (purchased at Best Buy, Walmart, online...) come with a default user name and password.

Often, that default combination is incredibly simplistic
    • admin / admin or
    • cisco / cisco or
    • admin / [none]
    • user / admin

The article I linked to suggests you reboot your router, update the firmware, and change your password. It's also a good idea to make sure your SSID (wireless) has a decent password.

This is especially relevant to Seer and Moutain Man, cause the Russians got your number!

All seriousness aside, it pays to be on the safe side.

While you're at it, you might have a tech savvy friend help you analyze your ports, to see how exposed you are to the public.

seriously, one that I frequently use, particularly with older folks who have a hard time remembering passwords, is to combine a phrase and a number that they will remember....

        Billy was married in 1975

So, he could use the password B 1 i 9 l 7 l 5 y - just interspersing the name with the number. If the program or device has to have a non-alpha/non-numeric, add a !

          *sigh*

Last time I tried to change my PW, I borked the router and had to buy a new one.

You can almost ALWAYS do a hard reset, going back to the original user/password. Usually, this is something as simple as holding the reset button in, waiting 20 seconds or so, and letting the router reboot.

OR.... You can get help from the Russians...

That's like the joke about the child who saw his dad enter the password for the parental lock on the TV and who ran off eager to tell his siblings.

"I know what daddy's password for the TV is," he proudly announced.

"What is it? What is it?" his brothers and sisters asked.

"It's asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, asterisk," he replied.

I've been tempted to actually try that

I recently read about a case where a man used his neighbor's wireless to access child pornography. The FBI raided his neighbor's house before it got straightened out.

Actually if you keep the original default password it stays very secure and really hard to guess.

Not if the original default password is "admin". That's the whole point.

On the ones that come with a unique password, that's not a bad idea, and there are "one touch" options to make it easier to connect without actually knowing the password - just having physical access.

That was the cause of the Equifax data breach last year. Their password for their site in Argentina was "admin".

I could get into most wifi routers when I was still doing consulting by Googling the model number, going to "support" on their website, and finding the list of default passwords.

Even if I didn't know the router model, I could guess most of them.
