As other posters have noted, I was talking about him running for the Dem nominee like he tried to do in 2016, rather than strictly as an "independent".

Sanders is the longest-serving independent in congress in US history, which is what I'm referring to when I call him an independent. In congress, he gets elected as an "independent" by voters in Vermont but chooses to caucus with the democrats, and gets appointed to positions (e.g. budget committee chair) as if he were a democrat. In Vermont, he typically runs in the Democratic primary, wins, declines their nomination and then runs in the general as an "independent". But for the presidential race itself in 2016 and 2020 he did/would slap the label "Democrat" on his ticket.

I'm saying he's got the outside-the-two-party-system, history of running as an "independent", flair that's popular with voters.

I think 2020 Sanders versus Trump in a general would be a landslide for Sanders such as the US hasn't seen for decades. And I say that based on looking at polling data, not based on some gut feeling. It would be the US's most popular politician versus the US's least popular politician. It wouldn't be remotely close.

Another factor: Bernie Sanders would be inaugurated at 79. John McCain was accused of being too old when he ran at age 71, for comparison.

IIRC, the main issue with McCain was the choice of Palin as VP, so the point wasn't simply that he was old, but that "if you happen to die in office, as seems totally possible, you're making SARAH PALIN President?!" Also, did McCain have possible health issues at the time, I can't totally remember...?

I don't think it was that so much for the primary, as she definitely had her base, as it was that McCain was exhibiting signs of... not necessarily 'instability', but... at times he didn't seem all there. And it was incredibly risky to attack him on anything, because he was "a war hero".

Each party (the two) is far more concerned about their own self-preservation than what's good for the country. I don't think the Democratic Machine could allow an "independent" to (can't think of the right word) 'hijack' their brand.

McCain's presidential aspirations were on life-support until he announced Sarah Palin as his VP which reinvigorated his campaign, and he suddenly became a real contender again. This fact was not lost on the Democrats and their mainstream media allies who pulled out all the stops to politically and personally destroy Palin.

Yeah, she was fair game, but, as I mentioned, even the Dems knew they had to tread lightly on attacking "a war hero".

His own party stabbed him in the back in the last election. Why would they want him now? Why would he trust them?

I don't blame the Democrats for not wanting him anyway because he wasn't a Democrat to begin with. He was using the party brand.

He caucuses with them, though. It's not like they were strangers.
