  • '50 Media Mistakes in the Trump Era'

This Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, Chuck Todd and his panel debated how often the MSM should call Trump a liar (essentially concluding it cannot be done often enough) while telling multiple easily checked whoppers themselves[1]. They probably could have benefited from reading a piece that Sharyl Attkisson, a multiple Investigative Emmy award winning reporter formerly with CBS[2], posted a week earlier.

Source: 50 Media Mistakes in the Trump Era: The Definitive List

We the media have “fact-checked” President Trump like we have fact-checked no other human being on the planet—and he’s certainly given us plenty to write about. That’s probably why it’s so easy to find lists enumerating and examining his mistakes, missteps and “lies.”

But as self-appointed arbiters of truth, we’ve largely excused our own unprecedented string of fact-challenged reporting. The truth is, formerly well-respected, top news organizations are making repeat, unforced errors in numbers that were unheard of just a couple of years ago.

Our repeat mistakes involve declaring that Trump’s claims are “lies” when they are matters of opinion, or when the truth between conflicting sources is unknowable; taking Trump’s statements and events out of context; reporting secondhand accounts against Trump without attribution as if they’re established fact; relying on untruthful, conflicted sources; and presenting reporter opinions in news stories—without labeling them as opinions.

What’s worse, we defend ourselves by trying to convince the public that our mistakes are actually a virtue because we (sometimes) correct them. Or we blame Trump for why we’re getting so much wrong. It’s a little bit like a police officer taking someone to jail for DUI, then driving home drunk himself: he may be correct to arrest the suspect, but he should certainly know better than to commit the same violation.

She then proceeds to present her list of 50 examples which I urge everyone to check out at the link above. While I'm still reading through them so far each is studiously documented (which is why I didn't try to simply re-post them) and don't contain a legion of examples that strain the definition of lie to the breaking point much like the various lists of the "lies" that have circulated on the internet about past (and the current) presidents over the years by various detractors.

The difference today is that unlike in the past when the media tended to avoid such scurrilous lists like the plague they now gleefully cover them as serious news stories without even bothering to note how many of the supposed lies are simple mistakes and differences of opinion. Of course back then most of those in the MSM at least tried to present a veneer of unbiased neutrality.

Count down to hand waving in 10, 9, 8, 7...

    1. One example is grumbling about how Obama was "uniquely" nailed with the Lie of the Year label by PolitiFact for his "if you like your health care plan, you can keep it" falsehood and Trump hasn't, which is patently untrue.

    2. And left in part due to increasing hostility at the network after she exposed Hillary Clinton's bogus claim she dodged sniper fire in Bosnia and later the Fast and Furious gunwalking scandal.

I'm always still in trouble again

So the MSM has been factually wrong in about 0.01% of it's claims over the past year, while Trump has been factually wrong in about 75% of his claims...

Sometimes I think you guys' understanding of basic science and basic statistics is so poor that you don't understanding that being able to find a small number of errors in thousands of stories doesn't actually demonstrate unreliability, and that reliability is actually a ratio of how often something is accurate versus how often it's not. I get that you don't all deal with scientific data analysis on a daily basis like I do, but I would have thought this was obvious?

I see Trump's at it again today with another whopper: "Crime in Germany is way up." (which he's blaming high immigration for). When crime in Germany is actually the lowest it's ever been in the last 26 years. Somebody please take away that man's twitter.

          From a German news site:

Germany's latest police crime statistics report revealed that some 3,372 cases of politically or ideologically motivated crimes by foreigners were recorded in 2016 - a number up 66.5 percent compared to 2015. The overall number of politically driven crimes had also increased compared to the previous year, by 6.6 percent.

It took 15 seconds of searching to find this. Guess we should thank Starlight again for a perfect example of lack of fact checking.

Are you so stupid you don't understand the difference between total crime, and the tiny, tiny, tiny minority of crime being done by foreigners (which will, of course, increase if there are more foreigner total)? I guess you are.

Trump said crime rates had increased and is the result of high immigration. The article confirms that crimes committed by immigrants is on a steep rise. I know you’re not very good at admitting you’re wrong, but there you go. Unless they are lying. Are they lying?

Don't look now, but your bias is showing. If your source, Sharyl Attkisson is such a fair reporter, why is right-wing media defending her?

So by definition if what you call the "right-wing media" has defended her it is impossible for her to be fair. Hence by your logic you just proved that the left-wing media's staunch defense of Comey and Mueller proves that they are dishonestly biased and untrustworthy.

According to the blog you cited she has "revealed herself to be an anti-Obama conservative-leaning reporter" and yet never gave a shred of evidence to support it. I guess for that blogger having the temerity to expose the Fast and Furious scandal qualifies since it is verboten to do anything but laud praise and adoration upon him and never, ever report on anything that might cast something his Administration did in a negative light (maybe that explains why they studiously ignored the placing of "kids in cages" while he was in office). And being awarded multiple Investigative Emmys is "shoddy nature of her reporting."

                        Further down in the article:

The report, which was presented by de Maiziere in Berlin, also highlighted a considerable growth in murder and manslaughter and in rape and sexual assault cases. The statistics were up 14.3 percent and 12.8 percent from 2015, respectively. The numbers were, however, more dramatic among asylum seekers: crimes committed by refugees were up 52.7 percent in 2016 compared to 2015.
