  • Westerns

Westerns are hit and miss for me, but when they hit they can make for some awesome movies. What are some of your favorites?
    • Tombstone (obviously)
    • Ravenous (this one isn't really a pure western, but close enough)
    • Bone Tomahawk (This and the next one are extremely brutal at times, so fair warning)
    • Brawl in Cell Block 99 (not a western at all, but it's by the director of Bone Tomahawk and stylistically/thematically close enough...also, one of my absolute favs)
    • Open Range (has arguably one of the best gunfights ever put on-screen)
    • The Salvation (a Danish western? Why not?)
    • Appaloosa

I've seen Unforgiven and didn't really care for it. It had its moments, and Gene Hackman was excellent, but overall it was kind of "meh."
I DENOUNCE DONALD J. TRUMP AND ALL HIS IMMORAL ACTS.

      • True Grit (both versions)
      • Rooster Cogburn
      • The Good and the Bad and the Ugly
      • The Magnificent Seven (the remake wasn't as good but still excellent)
      • The Outlaw Jose Wales

Open Range and Appaloosa were two of my more recent favorites. Hostiles was good. Both True Grits, I actually like the second one better - the Christian theme of the book was more pronounced. The Shootist, and of course Sparko's fav...

While Blazing Saddles was hilarious I never much cared for the ending. To me it seemed like the studio gave them 48 hours to wrap it up and that was what they cobbled together in a rush.

              Hmm...

              - Tombstone.
              - Wyatt Earp (not as much as Tombstone).
              - The Bend of the River (first time I saw a movie with Jimmy Stewart as a "tough guy").
              - The Outlaw Josey Wales.
              - Pale Rider and Unforgiven are... Ok.
Not a big fan of Clint's "spaghetti Westerns."
              - Open Range.
              - True Grit (prefer the original).
              - El Dorado (more than the others in the "sheriff trilogy," "Rio Bravo" and "Rio Lobo").
              - The Man who Shot Liberty Valance.
              - I kind of like "The Shootist," but the blood is a bit too fake.
I enjoy most of The Duke's Westerns.
              - I have to admit I get a kick out of McLintock, even though it's dopey.

I don't know whether "The Legend of Jeremiah Johnson" qualifies as a Western, but I like it.

I really enjoyed the "How the West was Won" TV series.

I also liked a couple of "modern Western" TV series:

              - Longmire
              - Justified (that show was flippin' GREAT).

My usual preferences are for sci-fi, fantasy, and superheroes. I have for years tried to figure out why I also greatly enjoy westerns.
